There is a lot of embedded functionality for choosing the amount of overhead satellite imagery (photos) that are super-imposed over the charts. That imagery includes land and sea features (bottom contour). The G2 Vision Auto Nav Mode is slick. It will actuallyplot out a track based on known navigable water all you have to do is run your cursor to where you wantgo to and select navigate to.I'lltake a video of the feature.

Would you trust it to take you from Beaufort to Cape Lookout via Back SOund w/o getting hard aground?

BWP

Thanks for your info. The 540 took me from Lake Moultrie to Charleston and out to Kiawaha via the Stono River this past weekend. I was surprised how far up the Cooper river the East Coast Chart went. Only the last little bit of the trip was not covered. The unit was easy to read in all light conditions on a 240 Searay. Initially when setting up the unit I found the directions a little confusing but this could be my inexperience more than anything. Next thing to learn is how to save the tracks from this weekend. Thought you might like a real world experience.

Can't wait. 540s being installed as we speak. I am anxious to put it through some tests on the Hudson River. This summer my son and I will head to Block Island from Catskill, NY. I also got the G2 card for my unit. Thanks for posting the videos.

Installing the Garmin 545s along with the XM antenna for weather on my new Albury. This may seem like a silly question but are the software updates downloaded via satellite and do they auto install?

That would be nice, but no. You need to download the update from Garmin's website to an SD card on your computer. Then install the card in the Garmin unit and run the update from the menu.

I suspected that the lack of buttons would make for more menu jumping. I played with one yesterday for a very short time and found this to be correct.

Then again, maybe it's just me and need to learn the "New Garmin"

As always. thank you for your time to put this together.

That is what I thought too. After playing with one for a couple hours it becomes very easy to use. It uses a slightly different format that you need to learn but after that it is a piece of cake. Changing the data boxes in the Nav screen took the longest to figure out as the info was a little vague but once that was figured out it went real easy.

Has any one got a 1kw transducer hooked up to one of these 5x5 series units yet? I would love to hear some feedback on the sounders performance.

I had no prior experience with this type of GPS before Friday. After 30 minutes of fiddling around the button became easy to use. This is a great unit.

Ran the Garmin Update today. Thanks for the tip EDVB. Total time from log on to finish probably 15 minutes and that included forgetting the SD card and having to make another trip into the house for the card.

I will be in Charleston and on the way to Beaufort, SC this weekend and it will be intersting to see if there are any differences with the software update.
