Default Garmin 498C OR Lowrance LMS-520C?

My dealer will put either a Garmin 498C or a Lowrance LMS-520C on my new Sea Hunt for no difference in price.

I will be using the boat mainly in Texas on the inland lakes and along the coastal bays. My wife and I will be using the boat for pleasure and for cruising coastlines looking for birds. We are casual fishermen at best.

I am wondering which unit will be better for my purposes. I know there is a difference in the screen shape, even though they both have a 5" diagonal measurement. But I am not sure about the other differences. I am especially curious about the difference in what charts are pre-loaded and the differences in the the software chips that are available.

I would appreciate any and all opinions.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the Lowrance, but I believe the 498 is pre-loaded with only coastal waterway data. You may want to verify the 498 covers the inland lakes area you want or you will have to buy additional Blue Charts.

Thanks for that information. I will definitely check into it. Also, does anyone have any idea which has the card with the best lakes detail?

You will have to buy a chip to cover the inland lakes on the Garmin unit. Sea Six is correct, the 498 DOES come preloaded with the coastal and offshore detailed maps. Can't speak to the Lowrance models.

If you have any Suzuki, certain Yamaha or certain E-Tec engine you will have the capabilty to network your outboard to the Lowrance unit and get fuel management info, RPM, trim, etc as overlay data.
