Default Lowrance EP-25 Problems?

Iíve been thinking of adding an EP-25 to my small NMEA 2000 network.

I currently have two EP-10 flow meters and a LMF-200. Iíd like to have the capability of a GPM display so I need a speed input. Neither my SiTex GPS nor my Raymarine Loran is NMEA 0183 so they canít talk to the network, plus I fish quite a bit in a river so Iíd really rather have something that provided speed data relative to the water, instead of the SOG data provided by a GPS.

My problem is that, all of a sudden it seems, the EP-25 is not nearly as available as it was a month or so ago. Boaters World lists them as no longer available, and two other on-line merchants I buy from have them on backorder with no projected availability date.

I have found several places that have them, but it seem odd that the availability would drop when theyíre pushing the NMEA 2000 stuff so hard. I thought there may have been some problems with the EP-25 and Lowrance had suspended shipments until they got some bug fixed. I tried calling Lowrance, but after 20min on hold, thought Iíd turn to the THT experts.

Has anyone heard of any problems with the EP-25?
Also, has anyone had experience with using the EP-25 as the speed data source for calculating MPG?

Im on my third EP-25, they work for awhile and then loose accuracy after 10mph.
My first one worked for about a month, second one for a day, third one for about 2 days.
Where did you hear about this problem? This is starting to make sense now!
After the third one I was told that these are not accurate but +15-20mph is not even close!!
You can always buy a LGC-2000

One of my distributors shows having one of the EP-25's in stock. PM me if you're interested. The paddle wheel type pick-up are really only accurate at low speeds. The LGC2000 would work, but of course that is speed over ground.

Iíve not heard of any problem with the actual unit. Iíve just experienced some difficulty in trying to order one.

After I saw that several retailers were out of stock, and didnít know when they would get any stock, I started wondering why.

Iíve thought about the LGC-2000, but Iíd really rather have my mileage figures relative to the water. Also, if I get the LGC-2000, Iíll have over $350 in my fuel flow meter system and have another antenna on my top. (itís getting crowded up there)

Lakensea,

Thanks for the offer, and I have found several retailers that have the EP-25 in stock.

But I think I'm going to hold off until I find out if what I'm planning will really work.

Has anyone else used the EP-25 as their speed input for a LMF-200?

Trey
The EP-25 works great with the LMF400 when its working. As I said before, I'm on my third sensor, going on a fourth.
The mileage figures are fairly accurate giving MPG, mile to go, etc....

Reel,

Do you know why it stops working?

Is it a mechanical problem with the paddlewheel/axle/bearing surface?

Or is there an electronic problem?

I think the issye you are seeing is the EP65 is the old blue connector. The new red connector is EP70R and I dont think you will see them for awhile. Another problem with your set up is when running in a river you get false reading with a paddlewheel due to river currents. Such as running with the currenet as opposed to running against it. For the most accurate reading I would go with an LGC 2000.
There is a setting on the LMF 400 for speed over ground as well as speed over water. I dont know if the LMF converts to speed over water, next time Im in the boat Ill set it up that way.

Steelhead,
i don't think it will have any way to convert to speed over water without a paddle wheel out there measuring how fast the water is going past the boat. As someone said earlier, it will vary depending on you traveling with or against the curent.(oops, I just reread and it was you that mentioned it)

The speed over water setting means that the display will get its speed from a paddle wheel sensor on the network, speed over ground means it will use the GPS sensor on the network.

I think its a electrical issue since it works fine for a couple days and quits.
The first unit lasted the longest, the second and third just a day or two.
I think steelhead is on to something with the red connectors. The first EP-25 smoked a T- connector which had to be replaced.

Unless they actually make a change in the speed tranducer, there is no difference between the blue and red connector units, other than the fact that the blue connector is the Lowrance proprietary connector and the red connector is the new industry standard DeviceNet connector. Actually, the only thing red is the connector on the back of the head unit as most of the "T"s and cable ends are now coming through all black.

laknsea,
The blue to red connector is different in the pattern of the pins. The blue has 5 pins in a circular pattern and the red has 5 pins in an X pattern. The cables and Ts I have are red on the ends just like the blue. Got them from someone from Lowrance. Maybe they were just the beginning runs and now have changed color.
