Default Lowance Flashing Depth Reading

Before I call Lowrance tech support I thought I might get some thoughts from some of you. I purchased a Lowrance LCX 26C HD combo unit over the winter. The system, including the 50/200 kHz transducer, was professionally installed. I had an opportunity to splash the boat yesterday for the first time since the installation and was pretty happy with the unit except for one aspect. The depth reading seems to have a hard time stablizing and flashes a lot. I found this happening some at cruising speeds in 20 to 30 feet of water, but it was much more prevalent while drifting from very shallow water (2 feet) to deeper 12 foot. In the shallow water the depth reading would flash and the display would not read the bottom properly. When I got over the ledge to deeper water it would take a few seconds and then read depth and display the bottom properly. I had a seperate Lowrance sounder before (X 105C) and never really had this problem. Any ideas? I am thinking the transducer has a problem but I have no way to test it.

Did you use 50kHz or 200kHz when you had these problems? 200kHz is the preferred for shallow waters.

Thanks for the reply. The unit is set to automatically choose between 50 and 200 kHz

Well, the unit is losing lock on the bottom (hence the flashing.)

Could be due to several things: Xducer angle, Xducer height, proximity to motors, interference coming from flow off the hull, etc. Can be a PITA trying to figure it out.

Please don't bother to ask how I know to check the cable connections at the back of the unit before you go any farther....... What can I say???? I'm not the brightest bulb in the box.......

Ed, if you were drifting in shallow water and had poor readings it would seem the angle was
wrong on the transducer. Most solid state electronics will not work properly one minute and without any changes work properly the next. Most likely the installation of the transducer is the
problem. Make sure that the unit is on 200khz don't take this for granted. I believe this shows
at the bottom of the sonar window while running. Since you paid for the installation see if the
installer can correct the problem first. If not try to post some pics of the transducer installation so that we can help you. I have the same unit and transducer siince Feb 05 with no problems and I
installed it. I also have the lcx 25 with a 200khz ducer that I recently installed for separate screens. Both are very good units so far!
