Default Raymarine C120 shuts off and comes back on

Almost like it is re-booting. I also get a signal lost error message but the unit finds it's location again right away.

Any ideas?

My E120's did that for a while until my installed came out and ran a new ground from the battery bank in the rear to the screens so they had there own gound. Must have been a bad ground on the boats buss board. Don't know if that is your problem but maybe a thought???

If it's not a voltage supply issue, then it it's likely the unit, though I did have one that did this constantly, that turned out to be a bad chart card. Verify good voltage (if it's intermittant, rig a multimeter where you can see it while running- I rig one to a lighter plug if availible). If voltage good, try running with chart, or with another chart. Then send it to RM service- turn around is about a week right now, but it's gonna get worse as the season picks up.

Thank you for the two replies-

I should add that this is happening in rough water only. This may help the diagnosis.

Check your power connection. Mine just started doing that, shutting off and sometimes restarting. I believe I've isolated it to a poor job attaching the power cord to my bus bar.

AHA!

Check all your power connections, from the batteries up to the unit.

Edited to add- I had a customer a looong time ago, whose electronics would blink when he came off a wave- and the battery would jump just enough to short it against a buss bar- make sure they are down tight while you are at it.

I had a simillar problem with my c120, it would happen in any condition. Sent back to RM under warr. turned out there was a bad or loose wire inside. Havent been able to use since repair, had done in feb. Like the others said, check voltage first then ground, if n/g, send back. God luck , Jim

Yes start at the batteries and work your way to the bus/distribution terminals. Clean and tight is what you want I had a similar problem with a Garmin. Turns out my battery ground post connector was loose. Those wing nuts get loose. I changed them out for nylock nuts. Problem solved.

Check the seatalk cable for shorting. Just a minor/quick short will cause the c-series to reboot. The fact that you loose your gps signal plus the unit rebooting would make me look there first.

Mine did that 85 miles off shore at night. Came home in bad weather in the dark at 10 miles with no radar. Sent it back to ray.Said it had a bad power pack. Have had no problems since.

My Garmin did that as well until I ran the unit power direct to the Battery
