First, do you have the 200kHz or the dual frequency transducer?

In shallow water the standard 200kHz transducer works fine, in deeper water a dual frequency thru hull bronse transducer will be the best choise. You can get these from both Airmar and Lowrance. Lowrance bronse transducers are made by Airmar.

Abbor, Not to steal the thread .... but I would have asked exactly the same question as the poster. How would you define shallow ? I boat off the CT/RI shoreline ..... probably am never looking for fish in more than 200' of water ..... and more likely less than 100' majority of the time. I have the single 200 kHz TD. Will the stock TD be just as good as any other in this scenario ? I have read elsewhere .... that the stock TD from Lowrance is made in Mexico .... and not as good a quality as what you could get from Airmar. Some have said big difference noticed when changing out to an upgraded TD ? Can anyone speak from first hand knowledge ?

I have stock 50/200 with my lcx111 and I noticed it does not pick up very good after 350 feet deep. I want a better transducer for mine also . I would like a shoot through and then leave my transom mount for the temp.

I define shallow as less than 200'. The problem with the 200kHz Lowrance trancducer is not that it's produced in Mexico, but that it's a small low cost transducer. I have experience with these transducers back when they where producec in US and see no difference. Downto 100' I would anyway prefer this transducer over the more expensive ones since the wider signal cone gives better coverage.

Of course the standard Lowrance trancducer has a much lower performance than an expensive Airmar, but downto 400-500', the performance of the transom mount 50/200kHz Lowrance transducer is usually sufficient. If you fish deeper a bronse thru hull trancducer is recomended.
