Default EPIRB ratings

Any one has any review on epirbs? I have a McMurdo Pain Wessex gpirb. My battery runs out at the end of summer so while my boat is down (putting in aluminum tanks, thanks to E10 and the government regs), I figured what a better time to get the batteries changed. Well, I looked all over the internet to find information for a service center in my area. Couldn't find any info, so I called some companies and they directed my to another company. So I called and got directed to another company. Finally got hooked up finding out that because the battery must be shipped hazmat, and my unit hazmat, it'll cost me almost $500 to change my batteries. I also found out that there was a recall on my gpirb and I didn't get any notice. Thank god I didn't have to use it for an emergency. Now in order to fix the recall, I still have to send in my gpirb with hazmat shipping and I have to pay for the shipping for their stupid ineffective manufacturing. If I have to pay that much, I'm thinking of buying a new one and will probably buy an ACR instead. It seems like they have much more service centers around and they can get away with the hazmat shipping for battery changing.

Anyone else have any stories? Am I the only one with this problems? ;?

When McMurdo Pain Wessex did the recall they sent me a prepaid box and I paid nothing for shipping my EPRIB. They made the repairs and it cost me nothing for the repairs or shipping. Try emailing them direct to find out what to do. Buzz

I got word that their going to pay the shipping both ways to fix my epirb for the recall and I just have to pay for the battery and install. Sounds better now. The company that I was dealing with in my state had no clue on this units and he's the factory service center for my state. He didn't even know about the recall. Luckily I did a ssearch on the web about my unit. Hopefully it all works out.
