Default Sitex AC-21 --- What is it?

On a boat I acquired there is a unit with Sitex AC-21 on it. It is on an antenna and has a regular vhf antenna screwed in the top of it. It has it's own coax coming out of it. It is a white tude about one foot long and two inches in diameter. Any idea on what it is and what it does?

Thank you for the information. Generally speaking, it is of no benefit. I do not have loran and unless I am wrong, GPS has pretty much replaced Loran.

Bottom line is to take it off completely and use the mount to install a good VHF antenna. Would that be your reccomendation?

Thanks for the reply.

I use both Loran and GPS - 1) as a check against each other and 2) each independently powered (redundancy is a holdover from my flying days). Loran provides better repeatability (gets me back a lot closer to those 'glory hole' fishing spots) than GPS does, but GPS provides better 'backtracking' in low visibilty situations. Loran units show up regularly on e-bay and are relatively inexpensive - I would have one just for 'additional' navigation info. If you don't go offshore fishing, don't bother.
