Default "Automatic Identification System" ? what is it ?

Installed the latest update to my nav system. Now has an "AIS" icon. What does it do ?
B.t.w. Ray C80

This is what Raymarine has to say :
"AIS (Automatic Identification System) Support.
(Requires 3rd party AIS receiver transmitting at 38400 baud, sold separately.) "

Check with BOE (board vendor) for pricing.

According to RM, availability is May 2007

Primarily for large vessels, but if you are a toy freak .......

Monitoring of class A and B AIS broadcasts

Overlay AIS targets on Raymarine multifunction displays in both chartplotter
and radar modes

AIS target tracking enhances your situational awareness by monitoring a target’s name, course, speed, and navigation

Garmin, Nobletech, Rosepoint. and several other Nav system providers all support AIS.... It's kinda of a cool thing when you operate in limited visability. On nobletech the information is presented with a bearing line from the vessel icon.... speed and COG are presented in alphanumerics.... The receiver itself can share a vhf antenna with a splitter installed, heres a link with a price for a single channel receiver.

Northstar m84 and 121 also do, as well as the 567, 557 and 657.

AIS is nothing new. Its required on vessels traveling in international waters and ships over 300GT I believe.

Yes, only other vessels transmitting AIS data.

Basically there are three type of AIS device.

1. Recievers only. These will pick up vessels transmitting AIS and you can connect them to your AIS enablled plotter using NMEA 0183.

2. Class A transponders. As well as recieving AIS from other boats they also transmit your position, speed, heading, MMSI, etc etc. These are for the big ships and transmit at 12 watts from memory. With class A you can also change your cargo type, destination etc.

3. Class B AIS. These will recieve AIS from other boats and also transmit your position, speed, heading, MMSI, etc etc. This is alot cheaper and is only 2 watts. You cannot change your AIS message on the boat but can connected to a PC at home and update your transmitted details.

Any AIS units recreational boaters will get will be AIS recievers or Class B transponders. Class B transponders will usually retail at $1200 to $1500.
