I would start with a hand-held VHF for around $150 - $200. Check out the ICOM 34. An EPIRB may be overkill if you're in the bay all the time, but if you go off-shore that would be wise. They are pricy though. You may want a sounder / fish finder since you are crabbing, but at the very least get a depth finder like a Hawk-Eye for around $100. GPS is cool, but not necessary if you are within familiar territory.

VHF,FF/sounder and a gps. When you buy a VHF,make sure it is DSC,that way when you buy a GPS,you can wire it to the VHF.If you ever need a distress call,it will send out were you are automatic and were you plan on boating, there is no need of a EPIRB.Those are over kill unless you go out more then 20 miles offshore. The new VHF radios with DSC/GPS systems help take care of people that boat inshore.Oh,if you have the system like that and if someone sets it off,it will come over your radio too. That way other boaters can help if need.

Forgot, first thing should be a Fisrt aid kit.Buy a good one,not one of those cheap ones.Take a course in first aid/CPR if you can.If this is your first boat,a boaters course is in order. You will get more out of boating with your family.Enjoy,be safe out on the water!
