Default New Garmin 500 Series Sounders

Does anyone know if these new sounders will work with the same 50/200 transom mount transducers that the older sounders (such as the 178C & 498) work with?

Also, has anyone out there purchased one of these new units yet? If so, what do you think?

yup, plug and play according to Garmin at the Miami show, and no, no one is going to have had one delivered yet, as garmin was saying early April at said show and no one has jumped on here saying they were taking theirs to their boat yet, I would surmise they haven't shipped early.

Awesome. Thanks.

I have a Garmin 178C that may be on it's last legs. Don't know if I will replace it with a 498 or one of the new units.

Looks like that a new 498 can be had for $500 or less right now, and that the new units will be between $750 and $1k.

Does anyone have a blow by blow list of what the new units will give you that the 498 will not?

OK, the 545S has an awesome screen (VGA, 640 x 480) and after seeing them side by side it is a big difference especially after seeing the Vision card on both it and the 540s (540s has same resolution as 498) it is a huge difference. Plus the sounder in the 545s is digital versus analog for the 540s and a 498 (540s is basically a 498 with better graphics processor than the 498 to handle the vision card, but still is limited by same screen resolution). that said, a 545s plus the card is going to set you back around $1,400 versus in the high $500s for a 498. You can also add the XM weather (GXM31) to the 540s and 545s for $250 plus the monthly subscription, no weather ever on a 498.

Where are you all finding 498's for 500.00? The cheapest I've seen it is 648.00 on BOE marine.

I've heard the 545 should ship in early April. We'll see.

Go on ebay. There are many 498's listed in the $500 range.

Actually, here is one (w/ a ducer) forabout $475.

Take a look at all the different combos of the 498. All the suppliers are reliable unlike ebay.

My point with the pricing is that it looks like you can pick up the 498 on the cheap right now. I would guess that they may become even less expesive after the new line comes out.

I would love to do a side by side comparison.
