Default A65 Installation Questions

1. I do not have a RF Ground to hook up, Can I just hook up the Positive and Negative and leave the RF Ground alone?

2. What would happen if I mounted the antenna on a vertical surface, like in the front of my center console instead of on the top of the console? I have a Bimini top and connot mount up there. My old Garmin 498 w/ internal antenna read fine through the top.

3. Small console, not much room to seperate Compass, VHF, Sounder unit, and A65 unit. How much do you think this will affect performance? I will make sure it does not change compass reading.

Thanks for any and all technical responses, I value the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

The RF ground can be left alone, or hooked to the 12vdc -

I have seen GPS antennas mounted to surfaces as much as 60 degrees from horizontal, but haven't operated them myself. More than just the angle, I'd be concerned that anyone in front of the console would ecplise the sky. I'd want to experiment with it before cutting any holes.

The only common issues I see with close mounted equipment is the Sounder interfereing with the VHF, and the VHF(in transmit) interfering with the GPS antenna. Keeping the VHF lead clear of the Xducer cable, and the antenna as far from the GPS antenna as possible is my usual plan.

Most of the displays will have a miniumal effect on the compas- the power wire routing is the thing to watch out for. It's surprising how often I find, especially on smal CCs, that the factory has put the compass too close to the gagues, wire harness etc, and the compass is non servicable from the factory.

Think about mounting the GPS antenna out on the gunnel- you can usually route the cable along the path the Fuel Fill takes, and just run it 2-3 foot forward, and mount it there...
