Default New here with no Idea. Uniden to Northstar Hailer?

Hello everyone. I'm new so please be gentle.

The boat I am asking about is in Alabama and I am in Chicago so I hope I'm not too vague. I am attempting to connect a Uniden radio (Not sure of the unit number) to a Northstar 925. I have the Uniden hailer cable but one end of it does not have a plug. It is bare wire(s). If anyone has an Idea about what I am talking about Please chime in. What do I need to complete this connection? I am almost certian I need some sort of plug for the 925 but I cant seem to find any information on it.

If you need me to clairify something, please ask. I will attemp to get answers to any questions.

TIA

TIA- The Northstarcmc site doesn't seem to list a 925 or any other independent hailer other than those as inherent features on their own ( or Navman's) radios. That doesn't mean you don't have one, but it's confusing ( especially as SeaRay lists a N/S Hailer as an $833 option).

Are you by any chance really just trying to hook up the DSC function lat/lon position input to a Uniden VHF radio ( that might have hailer feature, such as the UM625C combo) from NMEA 0183 output of a Northstar 952X chartplotter?

Umm, thanks for the reply. As you can tell by my name, I have no idea what you said. I'm sorry, I don't mean to come off like an idiot. I'm new to this but have a lot of background with cars and car electronics.

Here is what I am trying to do.

The Uniden has a button on it in case of emergeny. You push it and it sends out a signal for help (I think). As I understand the manuals of both the Radio and the plotter, they can be connected so that if this button is pushed the GPS coordinates that are on the plotter are sent also. DOes this sound right? I am trying to connect the two of them. I have the cable from Uniden with a plug on one end. I have no idea how to connect it to the 925.

Each unit will send and receive data. There are a number of wires on each unit that need to be connected to each other. Some of the wires are positive and some are negative.

I built a table for my hardware.

Device Color Flow Flow Color Device
Furuno GPS White + OUT IN + Yellow Furuno 582L
Furuno GPS Black - OUT IN - Green Furuno 582L
Furuno GPS Yellow + IN OUT + White Furuno 582L
Furuno GPS Green - IN OUT - Black Furuno 582L
Furuno GPS White + OUT IN + White Uniden 525
Furuno GPS Black - OUT IN - Yellow Uniden 525
Furuno GPS Yellow + IN OUT + Green Uniden 525
Furuno GPS Green - IN OUT - Black/
(orange) Uniden 525
Uniden 525 Blue + OUT IN + Black Hailer
Uniden 525 Brn/Wht - OUT IN - White Hailer
Furuno GPS White + OUT IN + AP3000X
Furuno GPS Black - OUT IN - AP3000X
Furuno GPS Yellow + IN OUT + AP3000X
Furuno GPS Green - IN OUT - AP3000X

Hook the positive 'In' wires from the Uniden to the GPS's positive 'out' wires. Do the same for the negative wires. In to out plus and in to out negative. Your Uniden will display a message on the display when the nmea connections are correct.

You also need to obtain a MMSI number and install it on the Uniden so the USCG will know who you are when you press the red button. Go to the boat us site and search for MMSI. Follow the links and you will have your number. Install it on your Uniden. It's in the manual.

NoIdea- OK, what I guessed does seem to be the case of what you are trying to do in spite of your 1st post. Apparently you do have a Northstar 952X chartplotter. Please stop calling it a 925 now. No such thing.

Have you opened the manuals to both the Uniden VHF radio and the Northstar 952 yet???

Here is the Installation Manual for the latter: http://www.northstarcmc.com/images/2...install-a1.pdf . Starting on the Section 3 -Interfacing on the manual's page # 39 (that's not the pdf file page #), you will find instructions for interfacing the chartplotter with other units (including but not mentioned, vhf's). The wiring info is shown on that page.

That same wiring color & input/ouput port wiring color list can also be accessed anytime your N/S 952 is on , by repeatedly pushing the STAR key in the lower center of the 952 until the USER CUSTOMIZATION screen page is displayed, then click PORT SETUP OPTIONS, then WIRING INFO. For your desired NMEA (0183) output to your Uniden VHF/hailer that list shows a choice of using either NMEA (port)1 or NMEA (port) 2 of the Northstar (these are internal ports, selected by the keypad through the STAR key).

The output wire colors for Port 1 output are:
Violet = NMEA 1 Out A (+)
Grey = NMEA 1 Out B (-)
Blue/White = NMEA 1 Out Grnd

Port 2 output colors are:
Yellow = NMEA 2 A
Orange = NMEA 2 Out B
Black = NMEA 2 Out Grnd

These are just a few of the wire colors inside the Northstar 18? pin interface cable w/ connector that connects to the back of the N/S 952X. That cable with attached N/S connector comes with all N/S 952X's.

I suspect you just need to connect those output wires ( either by sollder, seal, heatshrink & support, or with crimped ring-terminals to individually paired terminals on a dedicated NMEA buss bar you install ) to the appropriate Uniden NMEA INPUT wire colors as explained in the manual for whatever Uniden radio you have. Don't just try to match colors! Make sure the Northstar port you choose to use (1 or 2 ) is enabled and that the NMEA sentence "GLL" (for lattitude & longitude data) is enabled also.

It's possible you may need to deal with connections for NMEA data flow back from the vhf to the Northstar, but I doubt it as the Northstar chartplotter will not automatically plot the position of a VHF DSC-polled caller as some chartplotters will under some circumstances. If you do need reverse NMEA flow, just connect add'l VHF OUTPUTS to Northstar INPUTS.

As this is not the same as hooking up speakers in a car you might want to ask a buddy who is familiar with marine electronics interfacing to give you a hand. Then if it REALLY doesn't work you can contact the professional marine electronics installer or you may be on the phone to him/her right now :D . The good news is if you connect the NMEA wires the wrong way it shouldn't fry anything , just won't work. Don't do this with the 12v power cable.

You may find the proper Uniden wire colors here on the manual's page 12 : http://www.uniden.com/pdf/UM525om.pdf . Dunno if that is your radio, but the Uniden colors MAY be the same as in that link.
