Default What computer software do I need to load charts onto my Garmin GPSMAP76

I fish the North Carolina/South Carolina border area. What computer software do I need to load charts from my computer to my handheld GPS?

First off, the Garmin chart format is not like any other format. You will ONLY be able to load Garmin charts onto your GPS76. You will need the special cable that goes from your PC to your Garmin and then you will need to buy whatever Garmin charts you need for your area. I believe any Garmin charts you buy will come with the software needed to actually perform the transfer.

Depending on what areas you want, one of these should do it (One is for lakes, the other for saltwater). I believe you can buy them direct from Garmin and at West Marine (among others).

OS,

I am currently looking for just the software to communicate between my 76 and a computer. I don't think the screen is big enough for a chart. All I want to do is put in points with ease. I did ask Garmin what the limitations of the 76 are and this was their reply:

Thank you for your interest in Garmin Cartography.

The monochrome GPSMAP 76 will draw and display Garmin's MapSource
BlueChart data properly. The maps will draw fine, including depth info.
However, there is limited compatibility. The "find" function will not
be fully supported (in other words, with the CD data loaded to one of
these, you cannot automatically search for the nearest navaids,
anchorages, etc. in the unit, as is possible with the fully compatible
BlueChart units). The chart data will draw fine though.

Also, if you click on a BlueChart navaid in the unit, the complete light
info may not show (period, etc.) as it with MapSource on the PC and in
fully compatible BlueChart units. Also, not all extended text screens
will be available in the unit. For instance, sometimes you will get a
more generic thing like "light" or "starboard light," whereas with a
fully compatible BlueChart unit you would get period, color, height
above datum, etc. for the navaid. But you can still access all this
navaid and extended info on the PC.

You won't be able to view the marine chart's publication info on the
unit either...as this would be accesed through an extended text screen.
Also, it will not find all the marine services points and show all of
the information imbedded in them (US)...but you can get that on the PC,
too.

Bottom line: The maps draw fine and your position relative to them will
display fine, but some of the other imbedded functions won't be there.
Please let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for
your interest in Garmin.

Regards,

Nathan

All you need is the Garmin MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager for about $25.
