Default Transducer/Fish Finder Question

I am in the market for a fish finder. I've fished for a few years without one and I already have a decent GPS, so I'm not looking for a combo unit, also not looking to break the bank (hoping to keep it around $300-$400). I fish for stripers/blues in 12-100 feet of water in bays, rivers, and open ocean. My question is in regards to the transducer - is it that important to purchase the transducer separately, say from Airmar, or is the TD that comes with the fish finder good enough quality? Any and all info on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Airmar makes all the transducers for most (if not all) the major manufactures. So in essence you are buying an Airmar transducers. Every unit I've purchased comes with a box labled Airmar, with the transducer/ff.

Now a days, most FF units allow you to chose which transducer you want, kind of a-la-carte.

General rule of thumb.
Thru hulls out perform shoot thrus, shoot thrus outperform transom mounted (basically due to the increased power, and less boat interferrence at speed). Low profile transducers are a great choices- easy to install, good performance and mid priced.

More power- better performance but more money
