Default Combo FF/GPS vs tand alone units

I would like to hear opinions concerning combo ff/gps units vs purchasing individual units. I'm looking at a combo unit now, but have heard from a number of folks that standalone is better. If I go with stand alone, I would be looking at the Furuno 620 and a Garmin 492. Any recommentations?

Just bought the 620 and waiting for my 492 to come in. Unless I could have afforded a 10+ inch screen, the stand alones are the way to go. Had one of the smaller combo units and didn't care for toggling back and forth between screens and the split gps-sounder screen is just to small

If you have the space and the budget, stand alones are the way to go...or multiple combo units. One with GPS on full screen and another with the sonar would work, if one fails you could fall back on split screen on the unit that is still working. It depends how redundant you want your electronics.

The way I have my boat set up is a Lowrance LCX 104 on the console as FF and GPS, in the electronics box had a LCX 15MT that I just upgraded to a GlobalMap 7600CHD GPS. If something happens to the 104 I still have the 7600 as a back-up.
Both are wired on different circuts and different wire runs so a failure in a run does not kill both. Redundancy in saftey equiptment is always worth the money. A FF does out no big deal, in todays society where noone navigates by compass and charts a back-up GPS is a lifesaver. If you have the money go as big as you can fit, it will be better in the long run.
