Default New boat (to me) - Garmin 2006 - which nav chip?

Hey guys. I just bought a boat with a Garmin 2006 unit and I need to add a chip for the mid-atlantic canyons and perhaps Chesapeake. Are the Bluechart chips the only option? Is it ok to buy them from a non-Garmin source (much cheaper)? Is the bathymetric chart helpful? Do I need another chart to go with the bathymetric? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

i recommend getting the bluechart Cd-rom...does not have to be directly from garmin...i think internet price is somewhere around $110. then buy a second unlock code for the cd, something like another $75. you will also need a blank card, get 32 MB, around $40 and the usb card reader/writer...i think it's like $30. this will get you all the navigation detail you need for your area (region 1) as well as the bathymetric data (region 2). all of these maps can be written to the single 32MB card. you will also have all of those maps on your computer(s) where you can review them, create waypoints, routes, etc. that can be transferred to the gps. you can also review your tracks of where you were on the computer, and if you wish, use it to keep a log of where you went/what fish you caught on your computer.

Sounds complicated but let me see if I understand. Install the CD on my CPU. Buy an unlock code? (What is this for?) Then I can buy a reader/writer for the chip. Buy a blank chip and write the charts onto the chip and then install on the unit. I doubt I would be taking the chiop out of the unit much in fear that I would drive to the boat without it!

i guess complicated is a relative term, and relative to just inserting a pre-programmed card, yes, i guess it is complicated.

but you got it 100%. the unlock code is just because the americas cd-rom has the entire USA on it, and you only get to view one area per unlock code...you get one with the purchase of the disk, and then can add others as you wish at a slightly discounted rate.

the big advantage is that you will have the charts on the computer. if you aren't going to use them on the computer, or think the whole thing sounds like more trouble than it's worth, then just go w/the pre-programmed.

to answer your original questions, no the bathymetric charts are not deemed sufficient for navigation, and no you can not use anything other than bluecharts...which by now you understand come in cd-rom and pre-programmed fashion and do not need to be ordered directly from garmin.

I have the 2206 and I purchased the off shore bathy charts for NC. The detail of the embedded G2 charts are OK for inshore fishing but bot for offshore. Here are the comparisons.

1st picture standard G2 offshore charts

2nd picture G2 offshore bathy chart of the same area.

Default Here's what the inshore G2 charts look like

There is no need to purchase the Bluecharts CD ..... if you want to use is for planning purposes and saving data at the end of each trip thanks a good use for it.

Just a point of information. If you go the route of the charts on CD you will need a USB memory card programmer. Try and purchase a version 1.1 not the newer 2.0 because you can't do system firmware upgrades with a USB 2.0 programmer. Lil bug Garmin's aware of. Good Luck
