Default Garmin 188 connection to PC

So I've all winter to work with my Garmin 188 on the computer and now have only a few more weeks to load waypoints, areas of interest etc. Its finally time to get the boat back in the water after a long winter.

Purchased the AC/PC cables from Garmin and downloaded MYGPS.com on the the PC. Problem is that I can't get the PC to see the GPS on COM 1 or COM 2. Dell thinks I need a "driver" but no instructions from Garmin on needing such a device. Customer service in the evenings stinks or is not available. Any suggestions.

Thanks.

Whats MYGPS.com? I log on to the site but need to instal drivers to run the program. Why do you need that to connect to your pc?

This is just MY experience and opinion:

I can't even get to MYGPS.com. I get a redirect with a window asking if I want to download Japanese text support!

Anyway, I have found that most freeware is useful but can be incomplete or not stable.

I tried EASY GPS based on recommendations here at THT. I had no problem with using it or having it recognize my GARMIN 2010C.

I manually added 110 waypoints, in EASY GPS from info I had stored in various text documents. It took a while, but I got it done right, down to the seconds, depth, descriptions, etc.

I uploaded the waypoints to the GARMIN which was easy and fast. I did a spot check on the waypoints once loaded, and found a lot of the minutes and seconds digits got transposed or even changed! Result would be that I would have been fishing off the Mid New Jersey coast on spots that should be no more than a couple of miles from Fire Island Inlet! I WAS NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!

I got the same results after creating the waypoints on the GARMIN than downloading to EASY GPS. Wsated about 4 hours of data entry between the 2 failed attempts!

I then tried GPS UTILITY, based on another recommendation here. Results were accurate, but I was not "comfortable" after the first problem with EASY GPS, nor did I like the "look and feel' of UTILITY.

I purchased the GARMIN MAP SOURCE program. Worked like a charm right out of the box! Also allows me to send the waypoints and routes file to some of my buddies who use different, but commercial programs to do their plotting and storing.

"A HALF truth is a WHOLE lie!"

Big E -

I read your post and feel your pain. I ordered MAP Source today and should have it for the weekend. Nothing is ever free!

I had a similar problem with my EMAP. I also had a Palm Pilot and as long as the software was active I could not connect. If you have a similar device that could be your problem.

Century -

Problem solved thanks to you. My Palm device was active. Everything works fine - now I can chart a course!

Thanks
