Default VHF

Folks, I am interested in opinions of VHF radios. I have been a fan of ICOM in the past and still am, my question is related to which model to buy. I use my VHF very infrequently, my primary concern is being heard in case of emergency. So as far as transmission and reception quality, is there any difference between the 304 and the 504 other than features? Secondly, are any of the features legitamate safety features that could come in useful?

I'm also happy with my antenna...Shakepear 5225...

I have the 504 as important as is the radio is the antenna you choose. You can have a great radio and go cheep an the antenna and no one will hear you.

There is plenty of 302's around, that was last years model.Hardly a difference in this years 304.I bought mine at AC boat show for $83 and am using a Shakespear 5225 XT.Should be fine for what you are looking to do.

Cafe has it right. Make sure you have a good antenna. Shakespeare is the most popular, but Digital Antennas are a step above. All good VHF radios basically perform the same, so concentrate more on the features you are looking for, then get a good antenna and mount it as high as possible.
