Default Raymarine C series - Weather/Sea Temp Question

I was told this morning that the Sirius Weather interface is now available for the C-series displays. (part# EO3014)

For you guys that have had the weather service with the E-series, what's your opinion of the service?

I'm really not interested in the forecasting, etc. as much as I am the charted sea surface temperature. That alone is enough for me to spend the bucks if it is deemed worthwhile. How about it? Is it any good? Appreciate the help.

The price I was quoted at Consumer Marine Electronics was $607.50 + shipping. If the sea temp info is not updated & timely I think I'll pass on this investment..... that's what I'm trying to find out. Thanks.

Tom, I have the XM weather on my Garmin 478 and the SST shots do not show breaks very well. It has general contours lines similar to depth soundings. I ran across a good 8 degree break but did not show up on the XM weather. I looked at the screen shots of the Sirius weather on the Raymarine C120 and I'll tell you if they deliver what the screen shots are showing it will be much better than the XM. I agree, the SST alone might make it worth it for us bluewater guys. Maybe with Sirius and XM merging, the service will be the same.

Mike:
I'm hearing mixed reviews. That's why I'm concerned. I've been told that the SST overlay provided by the SIRIUS signal is extremely accurate when it's updated...... the key here, is the words "when it's updated". I fully understand that cloud cover can delay updates, sometimes for days. I just wonder what the norm is. Hate to spend the bucks to find out it's crummy service.

That is the major problem, I spoke with them at the Miami show and it is only updated twice a day. Not much help for me as the Gulfstream is moving at 4knts. Weather and wave height are the main benefits, not sea surface temp.

I am waiting on a SR50. I hear it is only 2-3 weeks away. I downloaded the install instructions already. Kind of cool that it has RCA plugs to get music as well.

I had this same question. I know the data is available hourly from NOAA (see http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/products/product190.html if you are interested) and posed the question to Sirus who of course 'had ZERO clue'. In fact I had to speak to 3 people before they even knew about the weather feed for Raymarine at which point I was transferred to 'never never land' and just gave up.

If someone can get ahold of them, or maybe even Raymarine tech support will know, it would be good to know the update frequency and thier data source.

Twice a day would work for me. I'm probably going to take the plunge and try it.....

I used it on over 60 canyon trips last season .. it is a valuable tool for me .. although I would like a time/date stamp on the sat shot so I know exactly when it was updated. The resolution isnt perfect , but will get very close. My recommendation is to continue with your regular SST provider and add the Sirius so you can get the updates while fishing. In addition to the sat shots , the weather feature , marine forecast , buoy reports etc. are great

Mark: Thanks! I've done a bunch of calling and found these units are generally not available for another 2 weeks, but the dealers are taking pre-orders. I've found 'em priced from $569 to $799.
