I think it works well. I had a b/w Lowrance sounder prior to the Garmin 498 and the Garmin 498 sounder is superior. However, any combo unit with a 5" screen has limitations. I usually run either as a sounder or as a plotter, and use the data lines to give me information on the other function digitally. I have used the split screen but don't like it much.

For example, in sounder mode running at 200 mhz and 2X magnification, I have a data line across the top for SOG (speed) Course (direction you are travelling) BNG (bearing to the destination) and DIST (distance to the destination). I usually run to a location on the plotter, throw a buoy (if a bottom spot), switch to sounder, and look around. The data lines tell me where I am if needed in relation to the spot (and the buoy, if deployed). This system works well for me.
