Default Radar on Hardtop with dingy

Well, this is going to be a stupid question but that is my specialty

I have a 24" Dome radar mounted on my hardtop. Will it impact the performance of the radar to carry a Zodiac type inflatable dingy upside down on top of the radar dome? I carried the dingy this way all the time prior to the radar.

I would guess that if I were to ask the radar mfg (Lowrance) whether this is a good idea, they would say no. What I am looking for is some real world experience with this sort of thing. Radar should pass right through the rubber/hypalon, right?

Thanks!

I have been doing this same thing for the last 3 years. I have not noticed any difference in radar quality (certainly not an expert user) and the Avon raft is none the worse for wear.

My guess is it would be no problem, unless it gets so hot under the dingy because air can't circulate and the electronics cook.

An open array, however, would be another story (whack - whack - whack)

We have put an inflatable over the radar dome a few times and didn't notice much degregation of pattern.

Thanks for everyone's replies!

Do you think it would be more of a problem if it was raining and the dingy was wet? If radar is similar to microwave frequencies, perhaps the wet dingy would absorb more of the energy? I am in the Pacific Northwest and it is often raining when radar is useful.

Any opinions?

Thanks again!!!
