Default Garmin Update

I recently bought one of the Garmin 2210 chartplotters and see on their website that there is an update for the unit. I purchased a 128MB data card and USB card reader from an online auction site, loaded the USB drivers from the Garmin website to my laptop, and downloaded the Garmin Marine Updater software to my laptop. Put the blank card in the 2210, go to the System/Update menu, hit "prepare card" and get a message that says "transfer complete". Then put the card in the USB card reader attached to my laptop, open the Marine Updater software, select the card reader, hit "Next" and get a message that says "Card Cannot Be Read. Please try writing card with chartplotter again."

Tried this several times and can't get it to work. Also tried transferring data from the 2210 to the card and it saved it to the card with no problem, I don't think the card is bad. Anybody have any ideas? Is the update worth the hassle?

I should add that the unit is networked through the NMEA wiring to a Furuno FCV585. Would that be causing problems with the process?

As you said, if you are able to transfer waypints the card is fine. I would suggest trying to reformat the card again via teh software updater (I wasn't clear if you had also done that). The 128 mb card may actually be too big?(I use a 32 mb card for my 3010). I would contact Garmin at their customer service number (or email) and ask them if the card size is an issue.

Incidentallly, i have gotten Garmin on the phone twice in the last few weeks almost instantly when I called at about 2 pm EST. I had been trying first thing in the morning, but still had to sit on hold. If you ask Garmin to send you the update they may send you an update card with newest update on it. They have great customer service.

I recently purchased the Garmin 2210 also. Bought it from BOE Marine here on THT. The unit came with an enclosed software update card #010-00427-00 dated 12/04/06. I haven't loaded the card yet as the 2210 will not be installed on the boat until next weekend.

I bought mine from BOE as well but did not get the update card with mine. I checked out Garmins website before posting here but it wasn't much help as far as troubleshooting tips. My understanding is the card has to be formatted by the 2210 before uploading the software from Marine Updater. I'll have to give them a call, thanks for the tip on the best time...

ZX2050,

I had exactly the same problem with my new Garmin 498 last year. Went back and forth with Garmin a few times and could never get the download to work off their website.

They sent me a new card, thinking it was bad, we tried a few other things, but in the end they threw up their hands and sent me a card "pre-loaded" with the software update (which worked fine).

Might want to mention this to them when you contact them.

Best of luck.

Garmin does have a program where they will send you a pre-loaded update card so you don't have to mess around with the card reader. I think they put a hold aon a credit card, but refund it when they get the card back.
