Default Garmin 492C samea as the 498C w/o sonar?

I'nm going to get one of these for the coming season and I'm an adherent to the axiom that dedicated units are better than multi-functions, i.e. when the machine goes down at least I won't be without both GPS AND Sonar.

I see that the 492 is set up to use sonar as an option. I see that the 498 can be purchased w/o a transducer.
Are these then the same deal? Does adding a transducer to a 492 perform the same as a 498 or are there other features the 498 has that the 492 doesn't?

Thanks, Rob

The 498 is a combo. The 492 is GPS/chartplotter only. Buy the 492 for stand alone chartplotter.

That's what I thought but apparently a sounder can be added to the 492 and it will then have sonar capability

But why would you do that? I have a 498. Wish I had a 492 & Furuno 620.

If you buy a 492 and add the external sounder module it will cost you around $250 more. If you buy the 498 with the sounder already built in, it will only cost you about $120 more than the 492. You should decide which way you want to go before you buy.

Isn't the Furuno 620 a fish finder?

I'm going to go with seperate units anyway. I spend a lot of time looking for structure and I realize the split screen will be too small.

But the 498 is only $50 more than the 492 so I may get it anyway to have a B?U.

Assuming the transducer works with both units

I got a 492C and a Furuno 620 FF...integrated the two with a Furuno GD-30 for all of my data boxes and it's a nice set up...I've played around with it but have not fished hard with it yet. Can't wait...

I would stick with seperate units.

Not for nothing, but for the extra $100 or so , wouldn't it be better to get the 498 as opposed to the 492 and have a FF for the additional $100 or so ?....I mean in addition to the Furuno 620 Sounder .... You would have the same GPS , but now you would be able to run 2 sounders in case one decided not to work ..... Just thinkin out loud...Jim

The single X-ducer that plug's into the Furuno will not plug into the Garmin. So a 2nd X-ducer would have to be installed.

Just for fun, suppose I went with a 498 and a dedicated Garmin FF would the transducer work with both Garmin units?

Just a thought but for the price of the 498's I will consider just getting two of them, leave one set for GPS, the other for sonar. If one craps out the other can do double duty.

I was at West Marine today and I did notice on the display units that the sonar on the 498 doesn't seem as detailed as on their similarly sized dedicated FF's. Played around with them for about 20 minutes in demo mode and the 498 looked very coarse.

I have a GARMIN 498c. For sale $400.00 I also posted it in the sale forum. Here is the scoop. This unit has the internal antenna so there is no need to buy an external antenna. I bought the unit new from West Marine in May 2006. The unit is in great shape. There are NO scratches on the screen. This unit can be used as a fish finder, you will have to buy a tranducer. I sold my boat and took the unit thinking I was going to put it on my new boat. I did not want to take the mounting plate from my old boat as it would have left holes and the guy that bought my old boat was going to use his own Garmin unit, so it worked out for both of us. My new boat already has a GARMIN 498c units on it so I don't need a second unit. You can’t beat this unit for the money. I am selling the head unit, the face cover, the bracket, the owner’s manual, power cord, and the box. I do not have the quick reference guide, or the mounting hardware. I AM NOT selling the DVD that appears in one of the photos, but I'll make a copy for you for free. Please cotact me with any questions at 240-994-7883. Thank you
