Default Raydome Bird Settings

Looking for the best settings to spot birds using my Raymarine 4KW Raydome. I know a more powerful open array is better suited for birds but I got what I got. This months Saltwater Sportman has a blurb that says set the range at 4-6 miles, turn off the anti sea clutter (STC), turn up the gain as high as 90% until the screen is slightly peppered with noise. Once the noise apears, activate the STC just enough to remove the clutter around the boat. The echo return should be noticeable, moving across the screen chasing fish. I'll give this a try offshore this season and will post results.

Anyone else have additional settings to try?

Good luck, but I don't think it's possible with a 4KW closed dome radar.

Sure it is possible. but if the picture in your signature is any indication of the running angle of your boat you will have a better chance of picking up airplanes than feeding birds!!!!!!! Put a wedge under the dome..... It needs to be parallel to the running surface or even slightly tilted downward. Then try the method you mentioned. It is a good article. Obviously on days where you are in 3-6 footers it will be much harder to pick them out with the noise from the rough seas. On days with 3 foot seas or less I picked them up all the time. I can't tell you how many times I was running across the bay in "white out" fog and got scared shitless when targets immediately appeared on the screen heading right towards me only to see them as birds with the naked eye up close. I am always paranoid about the suicidal jet skiers..........

That is not the running angle of my boat. We were in some heavy boat traffic area and bounce a bit up and down....it's a shot of the up bounce. I've never been on a boat, including big inboard desiels that don't bounce a little.

Todays 24" 4kw domes , Especially the Simrad RA41, and the Raymarine unit, perform as well as any open array of a few years back, and will spot birds working out to about 6 miles, using the settings as described in Saltwater Sportsman's article.

They will require mild to moderate seas, and a bit of eyestrian on the part of the operator- and please don't get so tunnel visioned on the screen that you run into a trawler.

I can pick up birds with my RM 2 Kw by just setting the auto mode to " Harbor ", I had the bird scare in fog and dark a week ago. they were only about 2 mis. away though. I will try what you said next trip out.

Mike,I've spotted birds with a 4kw dome before. Not the greatest bird radar in the world but with my eyesight a 4 kw does better at 3 miles than my naked eyes do! The only other setting suggestion I can offer is to turn on the target expansion or echo stretch. That sometimes helps when spotting birds.
