The Icom 251 is an amateur radio.

All I know about it is that it is a ssb,fm,cw mode radio and it puts out about 10 watts.

I don't think that particular radio goes too high in vhf frequencies.....probably from 144 mhz.-150 mhz.
Not sure about that but it is an older type and I think it is before all the vhf radios were going like today's radios that now go to about 174 mhz. which does include the marine bands.

They go used for about $200.00.....nice freebee.

I am a ham and that radio is a multimode 2meter rig 144-148mhz I doubt it would be much help for marine vhf it may go up high enough in freq in the fm mode to pick up some marine but will not xmitt. most ham radio guys would love to have a rig like this as part of their station.

Eatmore,

With all the free goodies you got now all you have to do is become a ham radio operator......get your ham ticket and have some fun talking all over the world.

I have been a ham since 1976 and have talked to interesting people.....King Hussein was a ham and I talked to him before he passed.
The shuttle while it was in space and while I had it in sight was a bigger thrill though.
Lots of fun.....you should try it.

Here is a page about some info on your new ic 255

http://www.qsl.net/sm7vhs/radio/icom/ic255/specs.htm

And here is a page you might want to look at about ham radio.

http://www.arrl.org/

Good luck and have some fun.....Booby

the other Icom (Ic-555) is a 50mhz radio I thought they were the same at first but after looking I saw they were not.
I set there last night spinning that darn turner wheel for an hour before I found the button right below it and to the right was scan. LOL
With a cb ant. hooked up if these were working right I should have been able to hear (not talk) something other than static right?

Your are right this radio is 50mhz(6meters) another qood radio for someones ham radio shack your will not hear anything unless the band is open which is rare. Listen to 50.125 usb when the weather is warm around lunch time during the spring and summer. Maybe you can hear something then.
Good luck
