Default Sonar help

Hey fellas. This year I really want to learn how to read and use my sonar to locate structure and fish. I have a b175hw and a gt51m th. I seem to be able to read bottom and speed as show in the photos below but when going at slow speed 4-8 mph Im not sure I am getting the best read. Especially the side view. Wondering what the feedback is on these screen shots? Does it look like everything is functioning correctly?

Would love some pointers on helping fine tune the system

I have the same two transducers. One connected to a simrad evo3 and the other to a Garmin echomap. My HW is the "shoot through hull" version. I don't us the GT51M (Garmin) anymore. The HW is far better for me down to 300 ft. I don't fish any deeper than that. The HW also works for me to find the bottom structure I need. I do not have much experience with the side and down views so my comments do not apply to those.

I think your pictures look consistent with what my machines looked like in the auto settings out of the box. I played with the HW settings extensively and after finding the color and contrast I liked, settled on only a few important tweaks to my kind of fishing. I usually start the day off running in auto and then depending on water clarity and target fish type, make changes to the gain. Most fishing is auto to auto +2. Salmon is usually auto+2 to auto+4. I generally like to see more on the screen than what you have. I also use the gain to find the thermocline, if there is one. In the beginning, when moving slowly, I would increase the screen scroll rate to make marks longer and easier to see. I don't do that anymore because I can now easily read the screen based on different boat speeds. Took about six month to get there (5-10 trips). It was helpful to me to not make too many changes while fishing so that I could learn to id different bait species on the HW. That was a game changer for me. I took me one year to learn that.

There are some good videos on the web regarding preferred settings for different MFDs. I would start by googling "best ocean settings for XXXXXXX fishfinder". That was my starting point.

That HW is fantastic. You will love it. Good luck.
