Simrad NSS12 Evo2 won't update

Greetings all.
In my newly-acquired boat, the NSS Evo2 won't update from a micro-SD, even though it recognizes the file as type "udpate".
It doesn't update from startup/boot with the chip inserted. When trying to update manually from the file the "Upgrade" button is greyed out and non-responsive.
I talked with Simrad's support line, and they suggested a hard restart or factory reset (via pressing "X" + "Auto/Stdby" + Power). After doing that I get the same result.
The current version on the plotter is 3.6. The version I'm attempting to install is 18.3.
I'm using a 32 GB card with the download accomplished on an IPAD.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's something wrong with your update file. I know there are problems downloading using Mac, I don't know with iPad. Try to use Chrome instead of Safari. If you don't get it to work Windows and Android work fine.

I'll give that a shot.

Used a windows computer (Firefox download). Reformatted the SD card to NTSF, and followed instructions.... same result.
It can see the file, it knows it's an update file, but the "Upgrade" button is grayed out and non-active.

The only thing I can think is that it's such an old version on there (3.6) that it may not even recognize newer updates.
Is there a repository of older updates for the NSS Evo2 system? Anybody out there in the hive have an older update file I could try?

I've never seen any issues when going from very old to never versions. The problem you see I've only observed when something has gone wrong with the downloading of the update file. I've downloaded the update and will try to upgrade tomorrow if I find an Evo2.

Long shot , just in case....
Are you starting the EVO then inserting the update card and pulling up the software update file to try to install the update which it isn't giving you the option to do ? That is the manual way.

You've likely tried this but by inserting that 32GB mSD card with the 18.3 SW update on it before turning on the Evo2, it would ....normally.... automatically locate & recognize that file and would go ahead and update right away.

Is that the only Evo 2 in the system? Not sure if it makes a difference but if there is a Master & a Slave unit it might be worth making sure the Master is updated 1st, though they must both be updated individually I believe.

Master and slave is only related to power control. The real master in a Navico system is the unit first booting, but this is not related to software updates anyway.

Since the Upgrade button is dimmed down and not active it means the update file is not valid.

Yes - only Evo 2 in the system, and only hooked up to a transducer (currently disconnected as the boat is on its trailer).
I tried it using Microsoft Edge as well. File is 142.2 mb and looks fine... getting quite frustrated at this point.

If you insert the card with the unit off, then power on - it should recognize the update and do it automatically. Also, I think you might try the left slot.

Done it many times (cycling boats power with card in) and have tried it in both slots... same result of not auto-loading on power up, and greyed-out/non-active "Upgrade" button on the file.

Is your update file in the root directory of the card?

Yes. The *.upd file is the only file on the card, with no other folders or files.

I'd start from the beginning. My last update took several tries. I tried to confirm the correct file format but have been unsuccessful thusfar. I do know that when you download the zipped file, you should extract the files directly to the sd card. Don't first extract to your computer then copy to the card.

I'd try and connect the Evo2 to a wifi hotspot and check for updates from the Settings>About>Support page. This way you know it's getting the correct file. I can't post a URL, but if you search youtube you can find a video on how to connect Evo2 to a hotspot.

It needs to have the wifi antenna to be able to link up... unfortunately, my boat doesn't have one, and they're several hundred $$

I don't believe the file downloaded from Simrad is zipped.
It's 145,590 KB and is a .upd file (see image at top of post).

You are correct, Sorry for the bad info. I'd still start with a blank slate, reformat the card and re-download the update, go straight to the left slot with the unit OFF, then power up. It should proceed to do the update without you having to do anything. I know somewhere I saw that they wanted a specific format but I can't find the reference. If the next try doesn't work, you might try with an XFAT and see if that works.

abbor 04-14-2021 11:24 AM

The screen shot in the first post is telling that the SD card formatting is fine, if not the file wouldn't have been displayed. FAT32 is the standard format, NTFS is also supported.

airbrush 04-14-2021 11:30 AM

I found the reference that said a card greater than 32GB had to be formatted NTFS but I haven't found the ref for 32 and smaller.

abbor 04-14-2021 11:38 AM

I've just verified that the 18.3 file at simrad-yachting.com is fine. I've downloaded it and upgraded an Evo2.
