Default Upgrading electronics, when is it necessary?

I am looking at a boat right now (pretty much bought it, just need the money to exchange hands). Here is what it has for Electronics. Furuno 1650DF Chartplotter/Fishfinder with new triducer, Raymarine Pathfinder Radar, Standard VHF. These electronics are all a few years old, but when does it become necessary for an upgrade? I will mostly be fishing in the Upper Chesapeke, with a few off shore runs every year. The boat is a 25' Grady Sailfish.

It becomes necessary when either the units start to fail, or the user just wants new and improved technology.

When you have completely learned how to use the GPS interface.
In that case I'm never likely to need a new one...........

It's all peronal preferance, unless the unit is malfunctioning. My father in law bought a boat last fall that came with a Garmin 210 GPS unit. It's old and way outdated compared to what's out now. But it is color and bigger than his previous unit so he's happy and going to keep it and add a sounder.

It if were me I would yank it an and upgrade, but I'm always want the latest thing. I'm trading up from a Garmin 2206 to a 4208.

Maybe another time is if your e-charts are way out of date and you can't get an upgrade (discontinued format).

I guess I should take the boat out and see how the existing electronics suit me first. The one thing I will be replacing is the VHF. It has a Standard VHF, and a back up that looks older than I am. I am goinng to install a Icom 504 and use the Standard for back up.

The Furuno is a nice unit.
For me, one of the primary resons for moving up was 1) screen size and 2) color.

Particularly with the multifunction units, using split-screen to view radar/plotter/ff can make those windows TINY. If I've got to get within a foot of the unit and risk breaking my nose on the disply in order to see the buoys on the plotter- it's too small. Color TFT displays are now so inexpensive even in the larger display sizes very few monochrome screens are made anymore.

Spot on with replacing the VHF. DSC interfaced to your gps is a safety feature no one should be without.

for me it comes down to when there is a significant advancement of the interface or technology - I will probably skip this advancement by garmin and wait 18 -24 months for the next big thing...everything I have does what I want easily and simply....I would really like to have RM resolution but dont'want to pay for it at this time...

I am in the middle of deciding if it's a need or a want to upgrade my gps and finder. I have found that i dont need to spend the money to upgrade my equipment to get the newest and best, but i am going to get the best radar I can afford to add some more safety to running at night and low visibility conditions off eastern Long Island N.Y.
