Default My radar mount project w/pics

I purchased a FURUNO 1715 from Jim at BOE and I decided to fabricate rather than purchase a mount for the antenna.

I used 1" Starboard that I received as a sample from a plastics company I deal with. The 1/4" Starboard I had left over from a previous project. The U-bolts came from McMaster Carr.

The mount will be U bolted thru the Sumbrella fabric to the tubing of my top. Total cost less than $20.00 plus my time.

The aluminum mounts I considered cost between $175-$250 and I would either have to have a plate welded in $$$ or fabricate a base plate like I did.

I'll also try to post some pics during the installation of the mount/antenna and display.

Nice job. You should rout the verticals too.

Default RE: My radar mount project w/pics update 1

Update,
I attempted to install the mount this evening.
The first pic is a template to mark the thru holes for the U bolts thru the Sunbrella fabric.

I used a scribe to punch thru the fabric to mark where the hole should be and used a soldering iron to burn a hole thru.

The next 2 pics show the U bolts in place and the mount on the bolts. I knew the length of the bolts might need changed. Some longer(new) some shorter.

The last pics shows my install setup on the top. I need to place a section of plywood to span the top framing so I wouldn't stretch the fabric when I climb up top.

All in all it is coming together nicely. I should be finished with the step by now but the boat is located in a barn 20 minutes from my home and I never have all my tools with me.

Awesome, That will look nicer than anything you can buy! I will be tackling a similar mounting project soon. How did you decide on the height of the unit?
I have some rear rod holders that protrude above the hardtop, must the radome be above these?
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

no - you're fine...I will be interested to see if the starboard long term stays clean and holds it's color in the UV - I honestly don't know the answer to this...

Where are you going to run the data/power wire for the dome? Don't for get to extend the anchor light so that it can been seen above everything. Very nice job!! I recently had to add a hinge to mine so that we could trailer it so I am very familar with what you are dealing with. I will say that your starboard looks much better than my AL does. I need to repaint mine.

The overall height on the trailer is almost exactly 12 feet and the legal limit is 13' 6". This setup should be close to 13'.

The mount is about 5" tall and I just wanted to clear my GPS antenna.

I plan to run the dome cable thru the fabric via. a compression fitting. I'm still trying to decide how to mount the compression fitting.

I'll keep you posted but it might be a few days.

Sweet! It makes me happy that guys like you take the time to take pictures of your projects. I am always fiddling with stuff, and sometimes it actually turns out good, but I never take pics of the process! Guys like you provide great boat porn for all of us to look at.

I enjoyed a snow day today and finished installing the antenna. The RF should clear my GPS antenna without a problem.

Is the angle forward or aft? Kind of hard to tell from the picture. Looks nice!

May I suggest a Blue Seas Cable Clam mounted to the base of the antenna mount. Check out the largest size. [they make 3 sizes] That way no data cable cutting and the unit can be removed if need be latter on pretty easy.

Look close and you will see 2 of them in this pix mounted.

Thanks Wart.

No way am I going to cut the cable or terminations. The cable is only .375" and I believe the connector is .625".

I'll check into the BS's and post back.

BW,

They'd probably love to see your project over on continuouswave.com.
