Default Need help - Impulse System 4040

I'm looking for a Loran coupler that works with an Impulse 4040 -
would also like to find the fluxgate type compass that goes with it or
a wiring diagram for same if any fluxgate compass will work.

It seems IMPULSE is out of business so technical info is no longer
available. I didn't bother about the Loran at the time since I only
used the boat on local lakes. Now that I live closer to the ocean
I've decided to take up saltwater fishing and would like to hook up
the Loran for offshore navigation.

I have wiring diagrams for the speed/temp xducer and the
fishfinder/depth xducer but not the compass. Impulse did not make the
attachments themselves but relyed on vendors to provide the add-ons.
The compass connector is an 8 pin RCA Michropone (3/4 in. dia.) type.

The Loran coupler/base (which has the pre-amp built in) runs on 6v DC.
There is only the coax connector that hooks to the head - I would
imagine any coupler that has just the co-ax connection should work.
If there is one out there, lying around loose - let me know. I'll pay
any reasonable amount.

For all of you IMPULSE users out there - I will scan my manual
(Impulse System 4000/4040)and will have it available in electronic
format. The only difference between the 4000 and the 4040 is that the
compass function was not available on the 4000.

Thanks in advance - njmello@...

The Gem Electronics generic coupler does list the 4040 as working (843 394-3565), but I don't have any first hand experience, they say it will show as a short in the diagnostic but does work, so you might try calling them. Are you sure you want to try to get this up and running? Even back in loran's heyday, Impulse loran's were generally regarded as, uumm, lower tier to put it nicely. They tended not to work well when you could get them working at all.

Thanks for the info - I'll follow up with Gem. The Impulse is the unit I have - would just as soon get it working as start over. I have GPS but having been a pilot, I consider independent redundancy as mandatory. This is just for offshore fisihing, but I want backup in case of fog or surprise bad weather. Loran may soon be a thing of the past in any case. Thanks again. NJM

Ordered the Gem Electronics generic coupler - should have my loran backup functional soon. Would still like the compass hook up, if anyone can give me a push in the right direction.
