i havent run into a gps antenna that i couldnt extend to the top of a buggy top on a tower, so i dont see why you couldnt shorten the cable if you needed to. if the wire is a multiconductor like many furunos and garmins, i wouldnt shorten it though, no need for the extra splice, it would just be another point of failure.

if you have a coax cable for your gps like northstar uses on many of their models, then shortening wouldnt be a big deal, as you would just be replacing a connector.

good point..i'll call the manufacturer today.
the reason i want to shorten it is i'm mounting my new gps w/ external antenna on my flats skiff. going to mount it on a piece of starboard i'm going to place between the unit and my ram mount. this will place the antenna a couple inches in front of the unit. only need about a 6" connecting cable and the rest will just be in the way.

Is it too late to return it and exchange it for an internal antenna gps? It would make things much simpler.
