Default northstar 951

Just got a call from my dad. He noted that he was upgrading to a 952 and that he was going to send me the old 951. I already have a decent furuno plotter on the boat but thought I may use it as a back up or replacement. One question that I have -it may be a rumor.....Does the 951 only navigate/plot in North Up? After using my furuno that gives me the ability to change to course up-the 951 may be a hinderance.
Thanks.

Depends! The older 951's may not have full chart rotation choice but that can be corrected with a software update:

See if you can talk your dad into keeping the 951 & giving you the 952. Sooo much easier to read. Good luck with that :D .

That addendum says "This addendum applies to 952 software version 4.02 and later" I'm pretty sure that the 951 is a "heads up" only chart plotter. Older 952 units can get course up with a software update.

I think my 951 runs in either North Up or Heading Up mode, but I am not sure.... I always run it in Heading Up mode, so I know it can do that....

mike,
Just got info from my father who was nice enough to send it out to northstar for a full update and overhaul. What a great dad. He said that they can upgrade to have it show heading up. We shall see what it does when I get it. A good back up to say the least.

Good catch. l was pretty sure the updated 951 I use quite often on a friend's boat allowed the rotation choice that my long-term updated 952xdw has, but now you have me wondering.

I almost always keep the 952 in N -up mode for optimum chart steadiness anyway. Course-up is not too bad but heading-up makes the chart jump around way too much for my preference. My separate radar is left on heading up, but since it doesn't have chart-overlay the difference in rotation between the 2 units is no bother at all to me.
