Default Northstar M84

Got my hands on one these today .... very nice unit with goo easy to use functionality.Pice $1395.00. Very crisp display 800 x 600.

Low Profile, High Functionality...Northstar M84:
The M84 integrates GPS, radar, sonar, fuel management and video functionality into a daylight viewable high-resolution display. The M84 excels as a complete navigation package for boats of all sizes. Northstar High Definition Digital radar combined with C-Map cartography provides a comprehensive array of navigational aids, including chart overlay.

CHART
Northstar's 32MB embedded background chart gets you started, add C-Map's NT MAX™card for detailed chart data, value-added port info and land detail.

RADAR
Northstar High Definition Digital Radar brings advanced signal processing, better target presentation and better clutter rejection with your optional Northstar Digital Radar system.

SONAR
Equipped with a powerful 1kW (RMS) sounder that automatically adjusts the output power (1kW or 600W) to match the wattage of your transducer. No separate sounder processor is required. Simply plug the transducer of your choice into the M84 and you're up and running.

A.I.S.
Optional Automatic Identification System receivers display vital vessel information from registered vessels on the chartplotter screen.

FUEL MANAGEMENT

How do you like that unit? How's the visability in the sunlight. Can you plug a DVD player into it?

Long story short, looking for a new plotter/ff unit. Cannot fit the larger 10.4 screens, so looking at the next size down.

Tom - what are the primary differences between this unit and the 6100i (price aside)? I assume you looked into both. Does it take the platinum card and will it accept the weather interface?

The M84 uses C_Map NT Max charts, not Navionics so Platinum is not available. No Weather as yet. The 6100 will have Sirius soon. The M84 is not networkable and its sonar is built in, so no black box required, just plug in a transducer. They both use the same radar processors and scanners, except the 10 and 25kw are not mavailable on the M84.

The M84 LCD is is bonded to the screen so will not fog. A DVD can be plugged into the video input. Quality will be acceptable but it wont match a proper TV screen.

It also has good fuel and smartcraft functions.

The biggest draw back is not having the keypad like the 6100 does, but you make up for that in not needing the the sonar module. I had the 5600 navman and it was good to me. I just purchased the 6100 with the Hi Def radar 4k and in the middle of installing it in right now.

None of my local boating stores carries this modle, so cannot observe it for myself. So thanks for the additional info.

How's the viewability in sunlight? Some units alway say they are viewable in sunlight-but they are not. Was wondering how true this statement is on this unit.

Does the DVD player plug into the display via RCA jacks or do you need to modify plugs.

I've been looking to replace my current Sirman Plotter/Fishfind unit with a larger screen and use the more detailed cards. Having the ability to play DVD's is a major plus.

The connector on the back is a BNC, RCA to BNC converters are readily available for cheap. Viewability is sunlight is good, but you would want to see for yourself. The LCD is bonded to the Glass which helps, the glass is coated with anti reflective material.

Thanks for the additional information. I'll try and locate one in my area so I can see it in person, rather than on the web.

Looks like it will be the prime choice for my upgrade.

I think I've narrowed my choice down to the 6100 as well. As far as I can tell, the Navionics Platinum charts and the C-Map charts for the M84 are close enough in features. My main reason for going with the 6100 is to get the 6.4" screen - I just feel the 8.4 would overwhelm the helm even though I think the unit's layout is neater. There are just too many choices! I will be curious to hear your feedback on the 6100 and the Platinum charts.
