Default 376c question

I have a couple of questions on the Garmin 376c. I see that it is a portable unit, but want to buy it and use as my main gps unit on my boat. First, how long is battery life on a full charged unit? Can I use this unit for 12 hours on XM mode? If not, can I run power to this unit same as powered units? I know that the unit comes with a cigarette lighter charger, but my lighter is toast.

I have the 478 and I believe it's the same battery. Mine says 12 hours w/o XM going and 4-6 with XM going. But I normally have mine plugged into the power adapter so I can't tell you from experience.

It should come with a cable for permanent mounting, my 276C did. That cable has power and NMEA wires in it.

I use my 376-C as a backup and keep the XM weather on when aboard. I keep it plugged into my Cig lighter and never really use the battery. When I did attempt to use the battery once the battery failed to hold a charge. Garmin sent me a new battery without question. I love the little 376C. I mainly use it however for the XM Weather but it would serve as a good backup as well. Also the provided XM weather antenna works from my inside helm as well placed near the window. BigGrin

I have the original 176C and the battery life really depends on a couple of factors.

First, are the batteries rechargable or regular. The regular batteries last a LOT longer and don't just up and die on ya.

Second, do you have the backlight on and how high. I normally keep mine at 3/4 brightness all the time - but if I go stricly battery, I use the auto dimming mode.

Third, temperature. Self explanatory...

Now, I have found that if I have mine on the auto-dim, fresh batteries (Energizers) and let's just use a normal 60 degree-ish day, you should be able to get a full days use and then some. That will equate to anywhere from 10-16 hours (again, depending on the use, backlighting and such).

I always keep a fresh set of batteries in mine, but it's always plugged in to a 12v source when in use. The battery is the backup option.

edit - I tested my equipment when I got it and that's how I know I can get that amount of time.. You might want to just do the same when you get it. Put a fresh set of batteries in it, turn it on and check it every hour or so..

The 376c comes with the following items:[*]GXM™ 30 smart antenna[*]Marine mount[*]GXM 30 pole mount[*]Rechargeable lithium-ion battery[*]A/C charger[*]Power/data cable[*]USB cable[*]2 meter GXM 30
extension cable[*]Owner's manual

You can purchase the automotive kit seperately for around $190.00 which includes Garmin auto navigation kit 010-10510-00 City Select North America, full unlock, friction mount, dash mount, 128MB datacard and 12-volt power cable.

The battery life with XM weather is 10 -12 hours. With the XM Weather & Muisc about 6 - 8 hours). The GXM 30 antenna is a combo GPS data & XM functionality. The 376c has a small audio amp that controls the volume of the XM music if you use the Garmin power/speaker combo pictured in the above picture. It's a terrific unit.

Depending on what you want, the 478 may be a cheaper way to go since it comes loaded.

You can get a 376c for around $700.00 plus it comes with the XM Weather/Music antenna as part of the bundle. I comes with a license for Blue Charts and a little secret it can display G2 Charts.

You can get the 478 on Ebay for less then $800 and the only thing it doesn't come with is the kitchen sink.

Remember, the 478 doesn't come with the GMS 30 Smart Antenna needed to use the XM Weather/Music functionality. That's an after market add on that goes for around $200. Do those units include that antenna.

You may be correct. I'll have to look into it. I don't actually want the XM feature but others may.

You are correct, it doesn't come with the antenna. But it does come with the automotive kit (around $200) and all the land and sea software. If I understand the specs correctly, the 376c only comes with basic land mapping. So the purchase of additional software will be required. It still seems the 478 is a better deal even if you needed the XM antenna. Assuming the user wants to use it on land and water.

I have the 276c which I believe is relevant. The battery life as indicated on the display is dependant upon the brightness level selected for the display. When fully charged, and set to a night vision setting(read low) the time displayed for battery life is in excess of 14 hours. The display requires the lions share of power as opposed to the processor so its brightness dependant. In broad daylight on a boats dash the battery life shrinks to 6 hours at a brightness level that is useful to view the screen with. I use this unit extensively in boat and car and am really happy with its performance.
