Default what format are gramin memory cards?

I just added a 2210 chartplotter to my existing setup with the 198c sounder, so I want to transfer all the waypoints from the 198c to the 2210. Does anyone know that format the Garmin memory card is? Can I buy it at a circuit city or is it something proprietary?

They are proprietary. I would NOT recommend buying preloaded map chips. Buy the cd and load it on a chip that way you can use the map on your computer. If you get the pre-loaded map chips you can only view the maps on your GPS. You will need to get a Garmin chip reader to load and download to computer too.

Cd doesn't work for G2..but I don't think the 2210 supports that anyway.

I don't think it does that is why they are selling so cheap. Not a big fan of the G2 anyhow.

You can call Garmin customer service (and wait on hold) or you can e-mail them with your questions. You'll get the facts from the horse's mouth. You can often buy the Garmin cards and other accessories at a lower cost from retailers or Internet vendors than from Garmin directly.

Captain,
Garmin is pretty easy to work with, but they are proprietary. You should check with a tech rep, but if the 198C has a port for the special Garmin card, seems reasonable to assume you could simply download your data to a blank (about $40) card, then turn around and upload to the newer unit. Garmin does have several languages (formats), so if there is a conflict, we are capable of doing the conversions from one Garmin format to another. If I can help, call us at (910) 575-2898. It's still possible to do this even if the 198C has no card reader port. This would require download via cable to a PC, then writing the data to the "chip". We do it all. Thanks.............

I went to West Marine and they had an 8mb blank Garmin data card for $8.00. I'm thinking it was priced wrong but that's not my problem. I got it, hopefully it will work, but looking at the manual for my 198C I don't think I can save waypoints from this unit to a card. I know I can save and load points from a card on the 2210. If it doesnt work, I'll just get on the boat with a few beers one night and type them all in manually. I'll repost this weekend with the results.
