Default 24v and 12v

An option in my scheme to rewire my boats DC and AC system is to use 8-6VDC golf cart batteries connected in series and parallel to provide 24volts to a Xantrex load sharing inverter/charger. Xantrex make a 12v unit but of course it has a much smaller 120VAC output.
What would be the preferred method to connect a 12vdc source to the batteries for my 12v users?
Tap off the batteries as a separate 12v source, in addition to the 24v source. Or tee off the inverter 24v to a step down 12v transformer?
Or what?

Thanks,

David Morton

You need a dc-dc converter that steps down to 12 from 24. You would also benefit from a copy of ABYC E-11 electrical standards.

I love 24vdc wiring; I hate 24vdc prices! My boat is 24v everything except the VHF. This is what I use, one of these:

Whenever I get around to putting in the stereo it will be 12vdc, too, so I’ll probably have to upgrade the dc-to-dc transformer for more amps.

For reference, the 6amp model is about $190, 15amp model is about $250, and the 25amp model is about $370.
