Default Icom 506 VHF Volume Issues

I am having a difficult time hearing this VHF. Admittedly, my hearing is not as good as it used to be but while cruising in my dual console, unless the volume is way, way up. I cannot hear it well. The problem most likely is that the VHF is mounted at belt level and when standing underway, it is just too low. Rather than mounting an external speaker, I was curious whether using the speaker in the mic might work well if I mounted that mic at ear level or thereabouts. Does volume come out of the mic speaker as well as the main speaker in all cases. Dash space is limited and mounting a permanent extension speaker near my compass is not a good idea. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I would still go for the bail-mounted extension speaker kept at a carefully-checked suitable safe distance from the compass and aimed generally toward where your head is usually located at that station.

FWIW- My hearing is terrible these days so I use remote speakers in conjunction with very-full-feature handset-type block box VHF at both main lower and marlin tower station. My older Simrad RS 8400 2-station system is a codsend for people like me with substantial hearing loss & loud tinnitis to have good VHF comprehensibility over twin engine noise and wind.

That said, some speaker/mics might work OK if mounted as you describe.

FYI - the current Simrad "black box" radio selection includes the RS100-B VHF and GPS-500 which is a black box DSC VHF Radio with integrated AIS transmitter and receiver, external GPS-500 and support for up to eight stations, including four wireless handsets.
