Default New antenna, vhf radio no longer working

So I have an older uniden vhf radio and a t-top mount metal antenna that is maybe 2-3 feet long. I bought an 8 ft Shakespeare galaxy antenna and replaced the metal one.

After replacement the radio comes on as usual but I am hearing nothing on any channel. It’s either an exceptionally quiet day for traffic or I’m no longer receiving.

I didnt cut the cable on the new antenna, so that isn’t it. Any antenna replacement tricks I may not be aware of? Maybe an equipment compatibility issue with replacing a metal antenna? I expected this to be a simple plug and play.

Check that you are getting a good connection where the antenna and radio are connected and do a good inspection. I had an issue where I had an intermittent connection there. It should be simple as you state.

Can you hear any weather stations?
It's a simple plug and play.

Yes , as suggested by danny and Thalasso, check for proper connection at the VHF and check all Wx channels. At least 1 Wx channel should be rec'd.
Not even any static with squelch turned low/off and volume up a bit ? Do you have squelch set to just barely eliminate static & no higher?

Channel set is USA, not CAN or INT? Antenna plumb?

If you have a handheld VHF, will it receive Tx from that?

Unfortunately due to legal issues, Sea Tow no longer offers it's formerly very helpful automated radio check response system. But one of their captains may answer a check request on ch. 9 to keep 16 clear .

If that Galaxy 8'er is the common 5225-XT model , the specs say it is "DC grounded" so you should be able to test good continuity between the center conductor and shield ( outer part of the PL-259 connector.

Put the old antenna back on to see if it works again.
