Area is South Long Island NY to NJ. Have Simrad Evo3S with Navionics Platinum+ chip. Considering adding a 3D chip. Is it worth it? Which one would you recommend?

Have you downloaded the Relief Shading function update to your registered Navionics P+ card yet ?
It's a lot of data so it may take a while, but is probably about as good or better than most of the spendy independent 3D card suppliers.

Thanks TT. My chip has the relief shading. I am not very impressed. Looks to me like the advertising is better than the actual, at least for my area.

If you get two chips (i.e. Long Island Sound and Block Island/RI Sound) with adjacent bodies of water are the maps merged/consolidated onto a single chip or are you forced to use two SD slots?

Due to the file size from the extremely high resolution data those charts are split. You would need to use one chart at a time. For most of our customers they only fish one of the two areas anyway. I did look at the Puget Sound chart. Looks great. It looks like some of the multibeam data that I've seen but I'm just guessing it's multibeam. Is this all from your sonars or do you use NOAA data also? Anyway I fish mainly the West Coast of Washington out of Westport (Grays Harbor) so that area up and down the coast out to the canyon edges hold the biggest interest to me. I'm sure there would be a fair amount of interest to the North part of the WA coast also. And then....I'd have to figure how to get past Furuno being non compatible at this time. iPad or a different manufacture MFD of some sort. Great looking stuff you have.

You're correct, most of our data for 3D charts comes from multibeam. The rest, particularly in shallow areas with clear water, comes from LIDAR. We do use NOAA data along with data from tens of other sources, including our own boats. We've got some good multibeam in your area but it's been a relatively low priority/low demand area. Yes, most of our 3D charts can be run on an iPad or Android tablet. As long as it has a built in GPS, most do, you don't need a cell signal, wifi, or anything else. The device will overlay your position on our charts in real time.
