Default Garmin Active Captain

Well I spent the day with Garmin technical support helping me set up my Active Captain and updating the various computers on my boat. Was wondering if very many folks out their actually utilize the app to update their electronics and if there are any niffy things you can do with the Active Captain system?

I use it update as well. It is a cool app. My buddy is a huge tech guy and he does all sorts of stuff through the app. He starts explaining it to me and I am like that’s cool. Than I try it and it never works. So I just leave it alone other than updates.

Other than showing incoming calls and text messages on plotter screens, I find it about useless.

I use it as a go between my iPad Navionics app and my Garmin GPS.

I'm not particularly impressed but maybe I am just not tech savvy enough to realize the benefits. I have tried to do my updates through the app but they have failed and I have had more success with an SD card. I could easily do without Active Captain.

Wasn't it supposed to also be a replacement for Homeport as far as a waypoint management tool?

I thought that was the reason why they dropped support for Homeport. Not happy about that.

I've never really looked into Active Captain, but will have to at some point for updates.

Are you able to use it to transfer your Navionics waypoints to the Garmin? I just bought a boat with a newer Garmin plotter. Have a lot of waypoints on Navionics that would be nice to transfer over without making a chip

Yes.

In my case I export my Navionics routes and "Markers" into Active Captain via GPX files.

Then, at the boat, I establish a wifi link between the iPad and the Garmin GPS plotter.

In doing this one of the devices, I forgot which one, sends out the wifi signal so no outside connectivity is required.

The active captain files synch up with the on board plotter.

It takes very little time and works great!

If your Garmin unit has an empty data card slot you may have a few issues.

At first I had none but at some point some sort of mismatch occurred and putting a card in the slot allowed it to be happy again.

The Helm feature is cool if your MFD supports it. Allows an ipad to remotely view and control the MFD. For example, I use it to control a GPSMAP in the tower while I am below, essentially giving me one more screen.

I sat down and figured it out and it’s pretty good IMO. Tons of features and room for growth.

I use it all the time and like it a lot. I just came back from my boat where I transferred about 12-15 new routes and the latest update. I also use my iPhone and iPad to control my MFDs from time to time.

I use it for updating as well. Had no issues with it. Also, was on a friends boat last weekend. He was looking at other spots to fish, it was nice to be able to pull up my chart and waypoints and look at spots that I had close to us.

It is a good go between for transferring routes from Navionics to your plotter as 8gv pointed out. I find Navionics to be much more user friendly and the routing is better than the Garmin plotter. The HELM feature is great. I am hoping Garmin can bring the mapping on their plotters and Active Captain closer to Navionics.
