Default Raymarine Quantum: "lightweight" radar? Any good?

I'm preparing for an electronics overhaul and was thinking of adding radar but my t-top manufacturer strongly cautioned against anything too heavy. This Raymarine Quantum coming in at 15 pounds fits the bill. Is this radar unit any good? I'd use it mainly for weather paired with Sirius XM and navigation through fog. Staying within 15 miles of the coast most of the time.

The Quantum is a great radar, I have them installed on all types of first responder boats here in the northeast. Great for collision avoidance and the doppler feature is really nice to have.

Thanks. Good to hear... have you found a plotter that performs well with it in the 12 inch range?

The only great solid state dome radars are Simrad Halo20+, Halo24 and Furuno DRS4D-NXT 24. Halo20+ is only 13 lbs.

I have a Quantum Wi-Fi radar networked with an Axiom 9. My main concern is collision avoidance in fog.
Very good returns of small boats. Does what I needed it to do.

Quantum is actually 12lbs and any of our Axiom / Axiom Pro MFD will work with Quantum or Quantum Doppler.

watched your radar seminar last night. Very informative. What 12 inch unit would you recommend to pair with a quantum doppler that maximizes its usability? Also why do you feel or do you feel the quantum doppler is better than a halo20+? I'm comparing those 2 units and deciding amongst.

Anyone know a good guide on how to better understand how to read and use radar more effectively?

I have the Quantum2 and have been very impressed with results overall.

Depending on your helm layout an AxiomPro 12 or Axiom 12 + MPK10 external keypad would give you the most flexibility. I have standard Axiom displays and the external keypad. I like the "zoom" knob and hard button control, and I also like having the remote controller mounted where it is easier to reach vs. being permanently attached to the MFD.
