Default Active Captain and OneChart Sync Problem

Ok gurus, I have a Garmin Active Captain and OneChart issue I can’t figure out.

I have a pair of 7616xsv units and use my iPhone for active captain which is connected to the garmin WiFi I have the G3 and Vision maps on my phone Active Captain and also on the MFDs which I run off an SD card registered and downloaded through Garmin Express. Thus I can see my charts in the phone app and on my MFDs without any usability problems. However...

Every time I connect my phone to the MFDs now, Active Captain starts a OneChart map transfer that takes hours and never completes. I always end with an error. Once I got to 99% and it froze. Most times it craps out much sooner.

So how do I get AC and One Chart up to date and sync’d on the phone and MFDs so it stops doing this?

If memory serves me as i use my iphone and ipad active captain and i don't have this issue but i turn off my one charts on my devices before i sync with the boat. if you have maps in one chart selected on your active captain on your phone then it try's to transfer them and update etc. shut them off on the phone so that all you are syncing is the waypoints and it takes only seconds.

Then when at home using active captain you can turn them back on as needed to plot ideas and view.

Not certain but believe this will solve your issue.

Cool, that sounds easy enough. How to I just turn the charts on and off on the phone though? I can see an option to delete them, but then I'd have to re-download everything the next time.

yes for one i only upload them if i need them and delete them when i am not using them as they take a ton of storage space up in the app and phone.

Makes sense. I suppose I don't need relief shading on the phone most of the time anyway. It would be nice if Garmin has some check boxes in the AC app to allow selection of what to sync or not sync.

And it may have i know my sync only takes a few seconds and doesn't upload charts etc. And maybe someone else will chime in and educate us both lol. As i am still fairly new to the garmin platform but learning it quickly.

only other possible option is have you registered your charts on activecaptian with your chart plotter? I haven't tried this but it is an option when in active captian to link up and register your charts to your unit.

I also have this issue with an 8616XSV. I have made numerous calls and attempts to trouble shoot with Garmin but no success yet. Generally it always fails sync, even the Active captain community updates seem "to much" for the SYNC software, and the MFD crashes. I always have a one map tile (1-2GB) for Puget Sound and that never works! There is no way to turn off SYNC for Onemap tiles that i'm aware of, other than to delete them which defeats the point.

Users should always have the updated one map tiles which contain all the latest NAVIONICS/GARMIN updates refreshed on a daily/weekly basis. The SD card or base map in your plotter is usually 6-12+ months out of date, if not much more for the less tech savvy boaters...and usually cost $100/ new map. Onemap tiles are free, and constantly updated...hence the SYNC really needs to work!

If anyone finds a solution or root cause for this problem please let us know? I plan on replacing my 8616XSV under warranty with Garmin once they have another unit. While my gut feeling is this is a software bug, I can't rule out hardware error either now....it reads SD cards really well, but 99% of the time fails to WRITE data to the active captain SD card without crashing.

who knows, I have given up...???

I think your issue may be with the unit trying to download your map tiles and the Active Captain Community Updates at the same time. My unit was doing the exact same thing last weekend when I was trying to update my map tiles via Active Captain. Once the Active Captain Community Updates finished loading my map updates transferred with no problem at all. It would be nice if you could select which update you want to download first so there not going at the same time which causes my unit to pause and restart the downloads. Hope this helps.
