Default Autopilot - general info wanted

I want to add autopilot to my 31 Open. I honestly know nothing about autopilots and the different components.

Can somebody break down the different parts/components to make a complete autopilot system? Are systems usually sold as complete kits or individual components that I need to put together?

While we're at it, please recommend a basic autopilot system for my Contender 31 Open with twin 300s? I have Garmin Screen and Furuno sounder on my boat...not sure if that matters.

TIA

I just installed a Raymarine AP EV 150. Very easy install.
My install didn't include part #7.

I've done extensive research on this for my 28. Going with the EV-150 as well. It links well with garmin via NMEA 2000. If your 31 has 2 rams you may consider the EV-200. Check the specs on what it'll push

Thanks! Did you purchase as a kit or individual items? Very helpful to see the different components.

I’d say contact one of the electronics outfits, here or elsewhere and tell them your particulars. Then purchase one of the kits. You’ll have to have a heading sensor of some sort. Personally for my new build I’m going Furuno and using their new SCX20 sat compass. This will give you good True heading plus it will be an extra or main gps source.

One word of caution regarding for you being a new pilot user. Be careful as you will kick yourself repeatedly for waiting so long to have a pilot. You will never want to go back to a boat without a pilot.

I just installed the Garmin Reactor 40 kit and it was a breeze. Your steering cylinder (or cylinders) will determine what size pump you need. The basic kit is a electronic compass, the ECU, a hydraulic pump that ties into your existing lines and a controller that mounts on your dash. If you have a compatible Garmin Chart plotter, you may not need the controller. I spent around $3k for the kit and al the Hydraulic parts needed and installed it myself in about 3 hours. Gil @ Semperfifishing was fantastic to work with.

I don't have Garmin, but my experience with APs is match your equipment. Everything plays nice

I replaced my old Robertson AP with Simrad’s AP44, HS60 and NAC-3 AP system that I purchased late last year. I did the install this spring and am unimpressed. As I type, I would recommend something else. We have not used the boat since my install so actual sea performance may be an improvement over what I see at the dock. I have some testing planned for this weekend including measuring both the CAN BUS voltage along with measuring the unpowered CAN BUS resistances to ground.

Call Brian at International Marine, frequent member on here and you’ll get exactly what you need for the best price and with the best service available. I bought the AP44 Simrad from him at it works like a champ.

Thanks for everybodys feedback.

I'm kind of skeptical going with a Garmin, just because I already have a Garmin unit. I feel like I'm constantly reading about Garmin Autopilot issues.

When I re-do my electronics, I'm going to upgrade my Garmin Screen and I'll also change out my Furuno sonar to a combo unit with a Furuno radar.

I don't like the idea of going Garmin "just because I already have a Garmin" .... Seems like plenty of people like the Simrad autopilot, any feedback on Furuno units?
