OldPete - I just got one myself. GPS Store seems the cheapest and most reliable. Huge difference with the Vision card.

Thanks.

Yeah. I went from G2-Vision on my old 4212... to the "Built In G3" on the new plotter, and honestly, what a farce. G3 makes it sound like it's "better" than G2-Vision. LOL. Not at all. My G2-Vision was far better than the G3.

Sneaky.

Old Pete ....

Sorry ... I just upgraded my G2 Vision Large Area to the G3 Vision version Fl VUS512L.

I'd be glad to post screen captures from my area so far I'm happy .... Garmin is using the Navionics chart data to build and update their charts. By the way the downloaded G3 charts are mucg better than the pre-installed ones. I don't have any idea why.

Let me know.

Tom

Are you saying the G3 download is better than the G3 preloaded? Or are you saying the G3-Vision is a lot better than stock G3?

(I think you mean G3 to G3)... but thought I'd check.

Thinking about buying a G3 to get the relief shading. I boat in the Morehead City area. Can anyone comment on how good the G3 is for that area? Also, is the US007R G3 Premium the right map to get? Is there any difference in buying a card vs downloading through ActiveCaptain app on the phone? The GPS Store has the G3 card for a better price than downloading via ActiveCaptain. But I'm not sure i I'd be getting the same information between those two. As OldPete is asking, any better places to buy?

Remember if you download the G3 Vision maps you can create map cards for each of the devices you have registered with Garmin express. So if you have two vessels you can have a card for each rather than have to move the store bought card to either vessel when needed. also if you lose or get the store bought card stolen, its lost forever. But with the download you can always go back and download the map again. The negative for the download version is it will not work in other machines not registered to you in Garmin express.

If you've registered all your Garmin equipment when you download the update it will give you permissions for the charts to be avaisable to ALL your equipment

He's saying that only if you buy the downloaded version and not the "card" version. Is that right? (Doesn't seem right, hence my question)...

Yes I have a G3 Vision download myself, the download is always available to me on Garmin express. I have downloaded it twice for both vessels, and one for Garmin Homeport, but unfortunately the G3 Vision card only works when zoomed way out on Homeport, if you zoom in close it stops working, regardless if store bought or download. Remember the download only works on the registered owners capable MFD's, will not work on anybody else's MFD so the card if stolen or lost is unusable to anybody else.

The store bought card if stolen or lost still works on any MFD, that is the difference.

And yes the download is available all the time but it also lists what units it can be used with .....

So, how much of this do I have correct...
*Downloaded version costs more, as it's a set price. The cards can be purchased cheaper than the download
*Download is available to you on any compatible MFD (or tablet or phone using Active Captain)
*Card can be stolen and used anywhere. Downloaded version is always there for you
*Card can be inserted into one MFD and seen on that MFD plus any other compatible MFD, if networked.
*Card gives you one free map upgrade within 12 months. Does the downloaded version give you that as well?
*Garmin G3 Premium sucks when compared to other premium marine chart cards on the market. Will Garmin catch up with the competition, and if so, when?
*I can download 'tiles' to my unit and only have the area I boat in, no need for the unnecessary data. But the data stays on the card, not on internal memory. So it would not slow the unit processor speed any. So I suppose no reason to do the tiles.

Yep the downloaded version gives 12 months subscription updates included I get notified when an update is available. I don't don't use active captain Garmin Express only. If your downloaded version is stolen from your boat it won't work in another Garmin machine that is not registered to you.Remember too Garmin is now using Navionics chart data to refresh their charts.

Tom

In this screen capture from ny 7610 you'll see little magneta triangles on the chart they correspond to the magenta ducks on the Navionics charts,

I'm pretty certain that if you register the map (SD card) with Garmin, you get the same 12 months worth of updates, no?
