Default Volvo Penta ‘Glass Cockpit’ 8215 compatible with GFS-10?

Greetings,

I have a Volvo Penta 200hp gasoline engine (not EVC) hooked up to a glass cockpit 8215.

i have engine data displayed on the screen, however it does not include fuel usage. Apparently without the EVC that data is unavailable.

I would like to be able to see my fuel usage L/h and I think the GFS 10 will do that. The 8215 is listed as a compatible MFD on the Garmin website.

The Volvo Penta dealer though thinks that it may not be compatible because of the different firmware on the Volvo Penta glass cockpit unit.

Has anyone used the GFS with a Volvo Penta system?

I’m a little hesitant to fork out for the unit to find it is not compatible, then try to sell it secondhand.

Eamon. How did you go?
I have the same glass cockpit and the volvo 240hp non evc. I want to try a garmin fuel sensor.

Neil,

I have got no further yet. I am still in dispute with the boat builder, Whittley about this. It is one of a number of build issues I am dealing with.

The lack of fuel data is not the only issue. On my screen when connected to a non-EVC motor, it locks out the settings menu so I cannot change units from feet-metres, km/h-mph-knots, celcius-farenheit etc. Also cannot change GPS coordinate format ie: set to 37.1234567 cannot change to 37,12.1111111, and will not even tell me which datum it uses (ie: WGS84), let alone change it.

Effectively by hooking the glass cockpit up to a non-EVC motor it prevent me from using the screen to the full capacity.

None of this was disclosed to me when I ordered the boat. The matter is yet to be settled.

Having said all that,. all enquiries I have made suggest that the GFS-10 it will not work. The Volvo Penta dealers have tried to use the GFL-10 previously and it does not work so unlikely the the GFS-10 will.

If all else fails and I cannot sort this out with the builder I will likely try tit just to satisfy myself, but I am not hopeful, I'd be interested to know how you go if you try it. Only other 'solution' is to install an 'easy connect' which will allow bluetooth connection to your phone so you can see instantaneous fuel usage (ie: L/h) but will not track total fuel usage per trip etc.

What boat do you have?

HI Eamon.
I've got a CR2800. Like you I am disappointed about not having fuel management. Issue is volvo giving a choice to the builder, but the builder said EVC gave too many issues so they prefer to go non EVC.

Whittley say they have used the garmin GFS10 with success before and I'm going to give it a go. It has nothing to do with the motor. It just plugs into the network. Cheaper than Easy Connect as well. Hardest part is getting to the back of the fuel gauge to get tank levels and usage.

Have you spoken to Simon at Aquapower? I'm waiting on a call because I started the boat in my yard and don't see any engine data at all.

Neil,

I have spoken to Simon on many occasions. He is the one who is convinced it will not work.

I’m interested to know who you spoke to at Whittley who told you About successfully using the GFS-10 because Whittley (I am now dealing with Neville) defers to Simon on every enquiry.

the lack of engine data is an intermittent issue with my screen too. Last conversation with Whittley was that it will likely be a warranty job.

What I simply cannot understand is that the ‘volvo Penta glass cockpit’ unit can never get the fuel data from the non-EVC motor, but connecting to any standard Garmin MFD via easy connect will. It’s just insane. And Whittley keep pumping them out it seems, as I have been told they got a good deal on a bulk lot.

Apparently the only data you get with easy connect is instant fuel. Nothing else bar maps and where you are.
Just got off the phone from Neville. But yes, he is getting Simon to call at some stage.
Maybe that's the issue. They sell the glass cockpit on non-evc motors.
Hopefully, your warranty issue will result in Garmin's latest.

I will. If I can get at the back of the gauge. Or pay someone to do it. Only way to get overall usage on the water.

I’ve read this thread with interest. I have twin D6-IPS-450s (EVC-C2) diesels and wanted to upgrade my engine display to Glass cockpit. Both my local dealer and a Volvo Service Engineer have told me GC won’t work. The reason i was given is that on diesels there was a fundamental change in how EVC works between the C generation and later ones. The difference being that the later versions are digital and earlier like mine are analog to digital conversion.

I suspect you are running into a similar issue. With regard to fuel consumption and trip data, I know that is all provided by the EVC system (even on earlier versions) and largely based on a calculation of injector bursts, rpm and time. I know Mercury uses a similar process with their SmartCraft system. If that is the case, using a Glass Cockpit display on a non EVC engine is never going to function properly because the underlying technology is not present. Keep in mind the Glass Cockpit displays are meant to interface with the EVC system with it being a device that will not only read data coming from the engine, but also allow either the user, or technician, to input data (tank size, metric/English, language) into the system. On more advanced systems GC is used to calibrate things like joystick controls, and IPS & sterndrive function.

I must say I am surprised a builder would install a display designed for EVC input would install it on a non EVC power package even if they got a deal on them. Here in the US a GPSMAP 76xx display is a fraction of the cost of the customized Glass Cockpit device. Heck of a lot of money just to get a Volvo Penta splash screen on start up. I think the only way you are going to get fuel data is to go old school and install flow meters.

Hank496,

I too was surprised when I figured out what they had provided. I thought I was getting a MFD that would have full functionality. It looks as though they didn’t realise it was going to be an issue at first and by the time they did they figured they would keep selling the ones they have hoping customers would not complain.

in discussions to try and resolve the issue They have suggested I pay to swap the screen for a standard Garmin screen. I looked at the 8416. To give you an idea of the difference, the cost price for an 8416 was around A$5000 and they were only willing to credit me $2300 for the 8215 glass cockpit including the GSD25 sonar box. The GSD is around $1000 so the screen is obviously really cheap.

if the GFS-10 works then that would be somewhat of a solution, however I am told by the Volvo distributor that the volvo Penta firmware changes the way the ‘gauges’ functions work in a standard Garmin and so the GC won’t recognise the flow sensor. I’d love to stand corrected.

Some success so far. The Volvo Glass Cockpit knows it is there. It doesn't let me add gauges.
Fuel rate was me blowing through the sensor.

Pic here of the Glass Cockpit saying that fuel is an optional extra
Contacting volvo about this.

Pic here of the Glass Cockpit showing details of the Garmin GFS10. Software fuel etc.
It knows it is there and is operational.

Can't actually post pics till I can count to ten(10).

sounds promising!

it was the gauges that I was told would be the problem.

i too have the ‘optional extra’ screen.

keep me posted. I’m taking mine out for a run tomorrow.

I called Simon and he was surprised at the info offered on the NM2K screen.

Have fun. We'll be at the Kepple's for the weekend.
