Default Icom 506 NMEA conflict questions

So Iím enhancing my electronic setup this winter. Iím adding Garmin AIS 600, Garmin autopilot, engine gateways and 2 Icom 506 VHFs. Obviously everything will be connected through the NMEA network. My question is about the radios and AIS. Since the Garmin 600 is a transceiver I do not need AIS on the radios so Iím going with the 506-11. Itís nmea 2000 but no AIS. I have been reading and have found some older posts about the Icoms messing up the network. Something about the other devices trying to use the VHFs for positioning. Iíve always had Icoms and have been very happy with them but should I go with another brand like Standard Horizon?

You don't mention which MFDs you have on the network. You might want to consider a Garmin radio if you have Garmin MFDs. That will allow you to call AIS targets from your MFD display without entering their MMSI's. Click on an AIS target (ship approaching for example) click "Call on radio" and your garmin VHF will call that MMSI. Very convenient.

That's very interesting. Thanks for that suggestion. If I cant do that through the ICOMs then I will definitely be looking at other radios now.

I have 1242 xsv and 942 xsv MFDs
