Default Furuno - Sirius weather coming soon!

Hey guys just was on the Furuno website and shows they will be introducing Sirius in the not too distant future. Talked to a tech guy at Furuno and said will be a software upgrade, should be in the next few months. Sounds like they will also be supporting the Navionics Platinum not too far out also. Good to hear that most of these things are just software upgrades, not hardware.

Anyone know how difficult it is to do software upgrades on Furuno? Is real simple on my Garmin.

Was debating b/w Furuno and Raymarine and waiting to see what would come out before spring. Think I'll go with the Furuno.

What did I tell you ... more venders jumping on the weather bandwagon ..... it just makes sense. It sure did take long enough for the pain to get to thedinosaurs brain after Garmin intro'd 2 years ago. It adds so much to the safe operation of owners and their boats. About time!

That's good to hear from Furuno, but any word on NMEA 2000? Garmin also?

And I do recall you saying something to that effect.

Now, if we can just get around the monthly fee for the weather report...

I talked to the Furuno people at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show yesterday about the Sirrius weather package. It's due to be released in the spring. Also, the weather package will only be compatible with C-Map Max/NT versions, not the Navionics.

I forgot to ask about NEMA 2000....

Spring... I remember Raymarine being 6 months LATE from when they said it was to be released. It may being comming.. just dont hold your breath. I think its great that other companies are going to Satellite Weather. Any safety advance should be promoted and made available for every model.

Hmm now I'm curious, when I called Furuno the tech guy said would work with Navionics. Gues I'll ask again Monday. Maybe will work with Navionics Platinum.

Ok, the Furuno website says:

"You will have the ability to receive high-quality and comprehensive weather information and forecasting that you can overlay onto your C-Map Max Charts."

Ok, so it doesn't exactly say you can't use it with Navionics. You probably can. But, it does imply that you won't be able to overlay the information on the Navionics charts.

Didn't notice that, would make it pretty useless with Navionics then.

The Navnet 2 units can all be switched from Navionics to C-Map and back again, just by a software update. Any Furuno dealer can do it, and it should take less than 5 minutes. This would be the same process as the update to allow Sirius. They just insert an SD card, boot the machine and wait until it beeps.

The Navionics code and the C-Map code are completely independent, so if the C-Map code is updated to allow the Sirius, that doesn't mean the Navionics will be updated. I'm not sure if Furuno does all these updates or if C-Map and Navionics do them.

I think it would be cool to have the Platinum chip on my Navnet2, but I'd be concerned about poor performance. I think the Ray e-series is a bit faster graphics processing. Having said that, I'll probably buy the Platinum chip for mine just to try it out.

Anyone know if the Sirius weather will be offered in Canada?

Will it be weather only? I know the Garmin can also control the music side as well....another cool feature.
