I would not buy a Northstar now as Brunswick has publicaly declared their intention to sell Northstar and Navman....I.e lack of support if you need it...

Northstar for chartplotter use. They don't come much more user-friendly, and I don't see any reason to think support should change for the worse if it is sold by Brunswick. However , the Garmin has a somewhat brighter( sunlight) display and does have the option of their relatively poor quality F/F function. (Long time 952 owner.)

The problem with the 952 is that it uses what Navionics calls the "Classic" for of cartography, and they have already discontinued one size/category of charts in that format (the original/small), so one has to wonder how much longer Navionics is going to update that platform in addition to the more popular and lucrative Gold and Platinum lines. Other than the 952, there hasn't been anything built by any manufacturer hat supports/needs the "Classic" cards in 3+ years, so they have little economic reason to support the platform long term, as over half of the units that were ever built that ever suported it are probably already out of service.
