Default VHF - Portable or Permanent?

Can anyone justify having a full blown VHF system, complete with tall antenna if you wont be more than 5 miles offshore? Will a portable or handheld VHF unit do the job? I've got a 22' bayboat and am debating whether to take up valuable console space with a regular VHF radio, instead going with the handheld.

Has anyone frequently used a handheld and found it to be adequate in in-shore and near-shore fishing situations? Primary use would be just for safety.

Thanks.

I would definitly get a permanent vhf. I towed someone a few weeks ago and all he had was a handheld. Poor transmission only 200 yds away

Permanent installations are harder to lose.

I've got one of these babies: http://www.standardhorizon.com/index...3&isArchived=0

It's very nice. All functions are on the hand-held so you can mount the base unit inside the console. It's also nice if you're at all concerned about theft; just unscrew the hand-held unit and take it home with you, or stash it somewhere out of the way on the boat.

As soon as we get an "Electronisc" forum, you can put your post in there.

Til then, get both. Remember to fold that long antenna before you tow...I'm on my third one...

I have been trying this for 6 months now and will probably switch to a fixed mount. I have a Standard Horizions hx471s and it's OK. Half mile transmissions are doable but the speaker isn't loud enough while underway to easily hear what someone is saying. You also have to remember to charge it AND remember to bring it with you after charging. I also don't feel good about leaving it on my console while getting the trailer or docked for lunch. I wanted to keep my boat simple but I think fixed is the way to go. Oh well at least I have a good ditch kit or back up radio. They are also about the same $ as a good low end fixed with antenna.

Fixed is the only way to go- I started out with a handheld and I could not even get a radio check or the anything on channel 16, I was about 1 mile out of the harbor- horrible. I switched to a fixed mount, there is no comparison.

Yes. Get the fixed. If you have to, use the short, stainless whip antenna to save room rather than an 8' antenna. I have both: the hand held as a spare.

According to Standard Horizon, the size/height of the antenna is much more important than the VHF unit itself. Maybe installing a decent antenna and attaching it to the hand-held would be a reasonable compromise? If it doesn't work out you could always add the fixed radio.

Get serious...Get fixed.

Also carry a portable unit. "Just in case".

Two VHF's are better than one.

I always have both. Use the fixed to talk with other people and if you need help. The handheld is the backup for lose of power, or anything else that could possibly go wrong. I have never used my handheld (except for testing), but it will be there when I REALLY need it. 5 miles can be pretty far with no communication.

I am a big believer in both. As far as stowing the antenna, in an emergency, the last thing you will want to do is screw in an antenna. It doesn't take up that much room. Come on, it's vertical! The radio itself may take up some room, but if you flush mount it, the impact will be much less. I bet you have a stereo (who doesn't?) Which would you rather have in an emergency?

just based on what I've seen, you will spend less on a fixed mount radio & decent antenna than you will on a handheld that will give decent performance. The cheap ones just don't operate good that I've seen. I've used a few high end hand helds that were pretty decent, but for the money get something simple like a ICOM 302 or Uniden Solara & a half way decent antenna. You will have a good settup for well under 200 bucks.

If you really want to have the handheld, fix it to a "normal antenna" via connectors higher on the boat. Get also a DC power cord from the boat to the hand held.

Little rubber hand helds antennas at low level very much reduces the range. In a less manner a lower output.
